“Careful!” Victor yelled at Jack as they manhandled the creepy old mirror down from the dusty loft of their debated great Uncle. The old man had collected a lot of strange junk from all over the world during his long life. Not much of it was what you might want to put on display in your modern living room though. Like this mirror. The black wood frame was carved with unsettling reliefs. And there was something off about the reflection it gave off. Probably just slight imperfections and distortions in the glass, Jack though. An antique like this would probably be worth something to someone at an auction.
Early morning light shown in from the high windows leaving beams in the dusty air. The two brothers carried the mirror down the hallway. Jack looked down at the mirror for a moment and as his eyes locked with his reflection's eyes, he suddenly lost all strength in his body. He dropped his end of the mirror on the floor. With Victor holding the other end, the whole thing tilted to face Jack at the moment of impact. A crack shot though the glass, and Jack felt as if it had shattered through his soul as well.
“You idiot! What did you do?” Victor yelled.
“Sorry. My hand slipped,” Jack said, making excuses.
“Well, that's just great. Look at that crack. How are we going to sell...” Victor trailed off as he saw the reflection in the mirror. It just showed Jack. Nothing but Jack. Not Victor. Not the room. Not even Jack's clothes. Just him in an empty void.
“What the hell?” Jack said, waving his hand experimentally. The image waved back, just like a regular mirror would. Except he was naked in nothingness.
“That's just bizarre,” Victor said with fascination.
“Hey, don't look,” Jack protested, covering himself up with his hands. He made to walk out of frame but hit an invisible wall.
“Ouch!” His hands pressed up against the impenetrable barrier of solid air.
“What is it?” Victor asked.
“I can't get past this point,” Jack said, feeling more worried than his older brother who was just intrigued. Jack turned to go the other way and hit another wall.
“What is this? It's...” Realization hit him as he looked at the mirror. His reflection was pushing up against the frame of the mirror. “It's the mirror!” he exclaimed. “Look! I can't get out of frame.”
