Kylie looked closely at the options. She thought she could make out “revert” on the dial.
Not trusting it she tried it on the maid. As hoped Lance was back, as handsy as ever making kissy faces at her.
She snapped a photo of Rut and Scoop. The dogs were back. Curious, she switched it to environment and photos the dogs again. For some reason it didn’t work.
Thrilled, she set the function back to revert and turned it on herself. She snapped the photo. Nothing. She snapped a second photo. Nothing.
Why? Why? That should have worked. She should be be herself again, not this girl. Kylie was about to cry. Lance was back. Scoop and Rut were back. Why not her?
An idea dawned on her. Why hadn’t she thought of it sooner. “I’ll be back in a second” she told Lance .She ran into her bedroom and dug around until she found a laptop on her desk. Opening it up she ran a google image search of the camera model number and found a slick pdf. Each function was labeled.
First, the picture button. That one was obvious. Next, the awareness switch, which had four functions: All, photographer, photographer and target, and none. Finally, the dial, which had four settings: random, environment, reverse environment, and revert. There was a brief description of each.
Random: this will cause a random change.
Environment: Target will become appropriate for setting.
Reverse environment: target will become wildly inappropriate for setting.
Revert: Target will revert to form held at waking and lock for 48 hours.
Finally, there was an ominous warning: Do not revert target unchanged since waking or there may be troubling mental conflicts.
She couldn’t help it. She started crying uncontrollably. What a goddamned mess.
