Danni rubbed her belly and felt one of the twins kick. She felt her maternal instinct kick in. She knew she needed to get that camera back before it changed her babies. Her dear babies. She was still three months from giving birth and she had hoped taking maternity leave early would keep them safe from reality fluctuations.
Play it cool, she thought, as she stood. She waddled towards the man holding the camera, careful to keep her eyes down and her direction slightly skew. She knew she had an advantage because they weren’t aware that someone was on to them. As she closed in she sneakily removed her pepper spray from her purse. Once in range, she fired a stream directly into Emile’s eyes, causing him to grab his face in pain, dropping the camera.
“Federal Law Enforcement” she shouted, flashing her badge, thankful she still carried it with her. Emile was still on his knees. Raquel had a panicked look on her face for a moment, then turned to flee.
No matter, thought Danni. The camera was really her target. She secured it before turning her attention towards Emile. “You’re coming with me, buddy” she told him, fishing a pair of handcuffs from her purse.
Emile, still writhing in pain, was in little shape to argue as a mall security guard helped place the cuffs. The security guard escorted Danni and Emile to the exit. Danni was already on her phone arranging transport. Time to go downtown. She hadn’t been at the office in a while.
Danni could tell there was a problem the moment she stepped through the door. The officer at the door read her badge and quickly called for the station chief.
Emile was escorted towards the interigation room and Danni was usurped into the station cheif’s office. He looked upset. “Danny?”
“Yes sir?”
“You’re Danny?”
“Yes, we’ve worked together for years.”
“You know you’re supposed to be male, right?”
Danni was floored. “Then my babies? Oh my god!”
“Yeah, no telling who they were but they almost certainly should be walking around on their own.”
“Well fuck. What now?”
“What caused the change?”
“This artifact” she said, producing the camera.
“Well let me snap a picture or two and see if I can revert you.”
