Daisy lifted a hand. “Woah, hold your horses there, Dr. Scientist-Person.”
“Dr. Grant.”
“Whatever. Are you saying you want to make MORE of those things? Isn’t that kinda counterproductive?”
“Yes and no,” the man gestured to the projector. “As you’ve seen, subjects don’t lose their minds, and the procedure is perfectly safe. Most even say it’s pleasurable. My own daughter can attest to it.”
Frank looked outraged. “You injected your own daughter!?”
“She injected herself,” Dr. Grant clarified rather uncomfortably. “And several others. It’s kind of a long story. Anyway, all of our previous subjects have already proven invaluable combating the infected, running supplies, even fooling the hordes into running around in circles. It’s the only reason the infection hasn’t reached out here yet. But we can always use more agents and more serum.”
This time, Cally raised her hand, her left hand since one of the hazmat men was taking blood samples from her right. “So, how did you find me? And how was I given the serum? I don’t remember getting injected.”
“One of our patrols happened to spot you and another young man running over the rooftops. They thought such energetic individuals would make good additions to our forces, so they used a blowdart. Unfortunately, they only had time to dart one of you, so they chose the slower, bigger target.”
Cally reddened. “I wasn’t that much slower,” she mumbled, eyeing the first case of her blood being carried into the barn where a temporary lab had been set up. Thinking back, she had no recollection of any needle prick last night, probably being too hyped up on adrenaline to notice.
“They were planning to intervene and retrieve you, but you vanished into a building swarming with infected. By the time we figured out where you were, you were speeding away in a fast car. It’s fortunate that you ended up in Brentson near where we’re set up. It’s also fortunate nobody mistook you for one of the infected and tried to kill you.”
“I don’t exactly look like them,” Cally noted, staring down at her skinny nerd body, more cute than sexy.
“Oh, that will change in due course,” Grant said. “Having started off with such…greater mass, your body forced the serum to spend most of its energy getting rid of excess material and changing your gender. The counter-virus is still inside you, though. Once it’s had time to regroup, the rest of your developments will occur. On the plus side, you will have the benefits of permanent youth, beauty, and the same enhanced abilities as displayed by normal infected. The same goes for anyone else treated with the serum.”
This made Cally grimace, both from having her male origins revealed to everyone and from knowing that she would soon be sporting the oversexed figure of a bimbo. Sure, her experiences so far had not been too bad, but still…
Dr. Grant clapped his hands. “So, any last questions?”
“Just one,” Ron spoke up. “Why don’t you keep using the serum on your own soldiers like you did before? Why use untrained people like us?”
“To be honest, we figured it was a bit wasteful after a while. Our infiltration agents rarely had to fight to fulfill their missions thanks to their 'disguise.' It was just more economical to utilize conscripted civilians for the undercover work and to save our soldiers for protecting key locations. Does that make things clear?”
Daisy yelled out. “Sure. But that doesn’t mean any of us are crazy enough to sign up for this! You’ll need to give us a better reason.” Several others voiced agreement.
The doctor glanced at the man in the suit and shrugged.
