The Magic Shop

25 year old Jane/Jake makes a discovery

Jake looked himself over one last time and then glanced over to the chest where Lizzy was stuffed in. He thought back to his terrible family and his shitty life and Jake laughed out loud. He realized how terrible his life had been, and after getting a glimpse of this version of himself's memories, Jake made up his mind.

Luke, turned into the woman Lucy, was a much better mother than Nancy had ever been. Ironically, Nancy as Nate was a better father than Roger had ever been. And baby Rob, for some reason not baby Roger, was a better brother than Luke had been. And finally the spoiled Lizzy was a lot quieter and probably far nicer as an inanimate object. Not like she was aware anyway.

Jake starred at his refection. He saw a cute little girl who had really only just begun her life. Jake felt he could live with the new gender, and decided a second chance was enough motivation to get Jake through the humiliation of wearing pink dresses. He took a bow out of his curly read hair, wrapped it around the magic camera, and then stuffed the camera into the very corner of his closet. Jake covered it with junk and went downstairs for a fun lunch with his new and improved family.

Jake went about every day and found he loved his family more and more. His mother Lucy was so kind and always took Jake to get sweets and the like. His new dad treated him like a princess which Jake resisted at first but later accepted. As he spent more and more time being treated as a little girl and hanging out with girls his new age and experiencing more memories change, Jake began to accept it.

More than that, Jane started to wonder if she had just imagined it all. School starting up again coincided with Jane's intelligence adjusting to her age. She found school work difficult and for some reason, couldn't remember all the stuff she had supposedly learned already. She began to question if she had made it up as more and more memories of her old life faded.

By her tenth birthday, Jane had only a memory or two remaining, but she was sure it was just some weird game she had played. As the years went on she got more and more friends, join the cheerleading team, had her first period, went through puberty, went to junior prom and then senior prom. Got a boyfriend who she loved. By this point, Jane had lived longer than Jake had before.

Jane went to college, had a bit of a bi phase, went to business school, and eventually got a job and moved out of the house. Though every few months she'd come back to visit and check in on her dorky little brother Rob and her amazing parents. Her mother was like her best friend and she always felt she could talk to her about anything.

One day, she decided to visit again and kissed her fiancé goodbye as she drove over to her parent's house a few hours away. They were renovating the house and told Jane to check her room to make sure she didn't want any of her old stuff they were throwing out. She went to her old room and checked around. She found an old blanket which she put in the little "keep" box. She also put in an old lamp, a stuffed bear, and her favorite Lady Lizzy doll from her childhood. She remembered all the fun games she had played with it, and then remembered when she even convinced herself that Lizzy was a real person or something.

That's when Jane remembered the camera. She had almost forgot about that old thing and how she had used it in that weird game. She shuffled around until she found the even older camera wrapped in a cute bow. She picked it up and examined it all around. It looked like a regular camera, but now that she held it there were some nagging thoughts in her brain. Flashes of her mother as a teenaged boy and her father as a woman bombarded her head. It seemed pretty real.

She was about to throw the camera out but suddenly couldn't. The thoughts were too persistent now and she felt like she had to prove it wasn't a magic camera.
