Colin looked at the countdown: time was ticking fast. The choice was laid out plain and simple: escape the infested Earth, or help somebody he just met?
The choice was obvious, and it was justified, so Colin got on his tip-toes and snuck into the shuttle as the ladies violently beat eachother on the floor.
He closed the door, crawled into the cockpit slowly, and quietly sighed in relief. The worst of it was over and he was out of there, nice and safe...
At least that's what he thought as the shuttle took off, until he saw Olivine hanging onto one of the fuel tanks. She jumped up and tried to grab onto the shuttle but slipped thanks to Colin making a slight turn. He watched her become a screaming dot as he left the atmosphere.
"Wow....." he gasped as he looked out at the vastness of the universe. "Now this is what I call a view."
He looked back at Earth with a deep set hunk of regret in his heart. For not being there for his family. For his friends. Not even for the random people caught up in this mess. But, if anything, at least he'd survive as a chunk of human civilization.
He sat in the silence, wondering just where the virus came from admist the indefinite, inky blackness...
