When the truck pulled onto the road, Jared's new canine thoughts kicked into overdrive. He rushed frantically from one side of the truck bed to the other. Wind whipped through his shaggy fur as the truck sped up.
Jared leaned his head over the side of the old truck. His tongue lolled out of his jaws and he panted excitedly.
A pesky thought fought for attention, reminding Jared that he needed to get back to his family. He watched as the truck sped through his neighborhood and wondered where the two guys were taking him. Suddenly, he saw his own house and, standing in the yard, he saw his brother.
"Kevin!" Jared barked excitedly. "Kevin! Help!"
Jared turned and rushed to the tailgate of the truck. He saw Kev, mouth open, looking shocked to see his sheepdog brother speeding away in a beat-up truck. His acute dog's hearing picked up Kevin's surprised "Jared?!" before the truck left the neighborhood and continued speeding toward its destination.
Jared looked down at the road. The truck's speed made the asphalt a dark blur. Leaping out of the truck would be suicide... and the doggie part of him wanted no part of it.
The doggie part of him turned back into the breeze, tongue out, panting and drooling, heading obliviously toward an unknown destination.
