Moon Lake, Andersons: Around Town

added by The Masked Writer 4 years ago O

"So, is dad all right?" Janice Harper asked.
"About as well as he can be, everything considered. But he does have a long road ahead of him to travel in hopes of making any kind of recovery," her big sister and future guardian Jenny Harper-Jenkins conceded.
"But there's no chance of him or mom ever coming back to Moon Lake, right?" asked Janice.
"Well..." began Jenny, while taking a look at her husband Harry. "I can't say that neither of them will never make the trip here ever again, but if they do, it won't be for at least a year. Why?"
"Not that I hate the man so much that I want to see him dead or anything, it's just that, considering everything him and mom put us through, I'd rather not ever see any of them ever again. That may not be right, but it's how I feel," admitted Janice.
"I hate to say it, but I agree with her," added her younger brother John.
"I can't say I blame you, but they are still our parents. If either of them do visit, we will have to be polite, but hopefully both will be changed people for the better by then," said Jenny, hopeful that someday her words might prove true. "I am keeping my fingers crossed that maybe someday Junior and his lady will at least come for a visit, if not move out here permanently once they graduate college next Spring," she added, referring to their oldest brother James Harper Junior.
"That I'd like," replied Janice.
"Me too," agreed John, then he noticed the kitchen wall clock. "Is that the time? Excuse me. I don't want to be late!"
And with that, John turned and walked away.
"What was that all about?" wondered Harry, as Jenny simply smiled.
"Ginger O'Toole," answered Janice, with a 'know-it-all' look on her face.
"There's been a couple of new developments on that front, which we'll talk about more privately later," promised Harry's father, to which Janice couldn't hide the look of disappointment on her face.

MEANWHILE...
"Okay men. Glad to see you all here this afternoon," announced Coach Nix, while checking out stuff on his clipboard.
But the look of gladness turned to disappointment on his face when he added, "Twist. I still don't have a signed permission slip from you. If I don't get one by the end of scrimmage tomorrow afternoon..."
"I know Coach," groaned Ben Twist, as his buddies Nate Anderson and Alex Ramsey looked on. "I'm afraid there seems to be a difference of opinion between my mothers on me participating," he said, not going into details that while Samantha had no problem with their adopted son participating, her wife Frances was another matter.
"Well, even if you get it sorted out and can play, we're still going to be short men. Even if we wind up play smaller teams, we still need a minimum of 10 for each side, so if any of you boys know someone interested in participating, get them out here!" barked Coach Nix. "I'll extend the deadline if I have to in hopes of getting more people involved," he added, which made Ben happy, "but if we can't even obtain the minimum, we might wind up having to cancel the whole shebang."
That made everyone present groan.

AND ACROSS THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT...
One lonely boy looked out across the field, wanting desperately to participate, as a familiar station wagon pulled up toward him.
"Come on son," said his mother, pausing long enough to let her only child in. "Sorry I'm running late, but I'll still get you to the Math-Olympics class on time," she promised.
"Okay mom," he said, reluctantly complying.
She never noticed, but he couldn't help looking in the rear view mirror at the other kids in and around his age having fun. I wonder. It's worth a shot...
"Mom, besides all the scholarly extracurricular activities I'm participating in, do you think it might be good for me to do something physical as well?" he asked.
His mother thought about it for a moment before replying. "On one hand, I can't argue with the basic theory, but the only way you're ever going to get into college with our financial situation is on a full scholarship, and Moon Lake doesn't have any athletic programs, so no college recruiters will ever come here for that."
"I know," conceded her son, "but I was thinking of doing it more for just having the exercise and a well rounded background and transcript."
"If we were having this conversation anywhere else but Moon Lake, I'd be more open to the topic of discussion. But I was born a normal human being and that's the only thing I ever will be. Your father was a normal human until he took up with that furry floozy and left us to become a were to be with her. You're still a normal human being and you're going to stay that way!" she said, adamantly.
The boy just simply nodded his head in understanding of his mother's position, but in the back of his mind was still the thought of Someday, my life will be mine to lead, and when it is...
