I could see in front of me again. I hadn’t quite had the time to realise it with birds trying to eat me and all, but I hadn’t been able to see forward, only sideways. I could see the pink skin of my nose in the middle of my vision as well as my eyelashes on either side. I closed my eyes, a feeling of disappointment welling inside of me. Guess the potion could only do so much.
“Oh cut it out!”, I chided myself, “you’re alive and that’s all that matters.”
I grinned at my foolishness. I had momentarily been vexed that the wishing potion’s effect faded after a while but quickly recovered. It didn’t truly matter after all.
I sat up, feeling icky, covered in slime and opened my eyes again.
Shock.
In front of me was the same fishtail I had a few moments ago, albeit a bit larger. Much, much larger. My upper half had turned back to being human, or close enough as I realized I still possessed some kind of fins instead of hands. As I inspected them closer, I realized I had a scaled thumb and the form of a hand but my fingers stretched out wide with a thin membrane joining each finger. It somewhat reminded me of a bat’s arm, in a way, as these fingers were folded to the external side, against my arm. When I stretched them outwards, only my index finger went all the way being straight, the rest lagging behind in an arc. My little finger had some cartilage linked to my arm. I looked over myself, trying to find other changes.
There seemed to be slits on either side of my throat that were probably gills and I noticed that my ears sprawled outwards, finned as well. Other than that, I was your average looking mermaid.
Covered in pelican’s remains.
I gagged.
