Paul was your average bad kid. He was 16 years old and had already started drinking and doing some light drugs here and there. His father left him when he was 8 and his mother was a prostitute to make ends meet. Because of this, Paul did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. Unfortunately he was out of money.
He was strolling around the mall just for shits and giggles when he saw some pregnant lady put an old looking camera down on a bench. Paul was thinking about stealing it when he noticed the woman just walk away. He looked around to make sure she wasn't there with anyone else but to his surprise nobody stepped forward to claim it.
"Hell yeah." He thought. "Free dough for me then."
He walked over and picked up the old looking polaroid. He examined it and he noticed all the buttons had weird labels on them. The one for taking a photo was still there but there was all this weird stuff like "awareness" and options like "gender, age" and all other non camera options. Paul didn't really care however as he just hoped that would make it more valuable.
He put it in his backpack and strolled out of the mall as nonchalantly as possible, just in case the camera was an item at some store or something. Luckily, no guard or anyone stepped forward and he laughed as he left the mall with free money. After a quick 10 minute walk he arrived at his crummy suburban home.
It was a rundown, one-story house that his mom had rented out after his deadbeat dad left. It was always a mess since his mom was never home and he was the only one who really lived there. He walked inside and thought the camera down in his room. He took a picture of it with his old phone and went to the family computer to put an add up on eBay.
He laughed as he made sure to set up a pretty decent price which he hoped would attract some camera nerds or something. He waited but no-one seemed to be clicking right now so he figured he'd take a quick look at the camera. It was still as odd as he remembered. He suddenly felt an urge to take a picture however.
He didn't really know why as he always hated how he looked. He wasn't ugly but he had nothing really going for him other than his wavy brown hair which was somewhat nice, at least if it was washed regularly. Little did he know that the camera was egging him on. As he was fiddling, he decided to flip awareness for user on, whatever that meant, and he was gonna flick another switch but it looked like whatever the "reality change" option was it was stuck on.
He flipped it around, feeling like an idiot for thinking about taking a selfie, when...
