James has lived in town for his whole life, working in the restaurant his family runs on the boardwalk. It's always been a quiet and sleepy place, and he never really had a good chance to leave. He stuck around for community college, and when his first (and only) girlfriend broke up with him he got hammered at the local bar and met his first (and only) boyfriend. That didn't last too long either.
Despite his poor luck wit h dating James isn't bad looking. He's just kind of boring. He's around five foot nine, not especially athletic, and his biggest hobby is reading. So when he heard about the new library opening in town he though he'd go the night it opened. He ended up staying in instead, but eventually, after a couple of weeks, he made his way there.
The library is a modern new building, with lots of glass and metal and brick. Over the door the metal lettering there's a motto written, "Reading Can Change Your Life". James doesn't give it any thought as he heads to the front desk. There's someone behind the desk and James has trouble placing their gender. They are slender, with short hair, and would be tall for a woman, but short for a man. The sign on the desk says "Avery".
"Hi Avery!" James says, smiling, "How's it going?"
Avery smiles back, "Not too bad! Slow. You work nights?"
James nods, "At the Old Town Grill. It's my first time coming by. Do I need a card or..."
Avery shakes their head. "Nope! Just come up front and we'll take down your name and address. We're still organizing but we are extremely proud of our collection."
James nods and glances towards the sign nearby. It lists several sections, not all of them what he'd expect. Sure there's a "Romance" section, but there's also "Anatomy: Animals", "Queer Narratives", "Cryptid Sightings" and more. He stares at it for a moment before deciding...
