Julie and Sharon both removed an apple from the bowl and bit into them. An instant sensation of sweetness filled their mouths as they chewed. Neither one of them had tasted an apple so sweet. Indeed, these were the apples of the Hesperides, fruit that no mortal could ever hope to compare with. These apples in particular were special even among the Hesperides, for whomever ate them was destined to join their sisterhood. Julie and Sharon were blissfully unaware of this as they tasted the fruit of the gods, each bite more delicious and succulent as the last. Soon they went down to the core and discarded them, not knowing that the seeds of their fate had been planted.
Later that night……
Julie and her family had gone to bed and were sleeping. But Julie’s was not a restful sleep. She dreamt she had found herself in a forest, lost and afraid, trees stretching as far as the eye could see, not a hint of civilization in sight. “MOM!” DAD” “DERRICK!” she cried, her unconscious mind unaware that she was safe in bed.
“Hello there, little one.”
Julie spun around hearing the unfamiliar voice. Somehow she had failed to notice the figure before her: A woman, or at least what looked like a woman For as the figure approached Julie realized that she wasn’t quite human. Indeed this figure was much taller than any human, had pointy ears, much like the elves in books Julie had read, and most obviously her skin and hair were GREEN. Julie looked down as she noticed that the figure was clad in very little but what appeared to be a leafy tunic. Her legs and feet were bare, and Julie noticed, transfixed, that where she walked, new plant life sprung out of the ground.
“Who- Who are you?” What are you? S-some kind of elf?” Julie enquired. “Where am I? The figured laughed softly, her voice high and sprightly. “An elf? No child I am a dryad a spirit of the forest. Do not worry, you are safe in bed.” “So I’m dreaming?” Julie asked. “Not exactly child. You see, by eating of our fruit, you have allowed me to contact you.” “Your fruit? The apples did this? Am I tripping?” The dryad laughed again, then smiled. It wasm’t an evil smile, but it was a smirk, like the dryad was hiding something. Suddenly the dryad began to walk away. “Wait, where are you going?” Julie cried. “Do not worry, sister Julie, we eagerly await the arrival of you and your mother.” “Sister? And how do you know my name?” Julie called, but it was too late. Julie’s vision began to cloud as the forest faded, as if it were an illusion. As it faded, Julie heard another, more familar voice called her name “Julie...Julie….JULIE!”
Julie’s eyes snapped open as she was brought back to reality. The first thing she noticed was a burning, feverish sensation. The other was that her mother was standing over her. In the darkness, Julie could see that her mother was also feverish.
“The woman… You saw her too, didn’t you?” Julie froze as her mother spoke with panic in her whispered voice.. She just nodded silently. “Mom.” she whispered “Please calm down. I’m sure there’s a rational expla-”.
“COME.”
Bothe Julie and Sharon jerked upright. It was the woman’s voice. She wasn’t yelling, but she was loud and demanding. Julie and Sharon’s gazes turned toward the sliding door that led into the woods. Suddenly the fire within them grew as they gasped out in pain. They had to get out. They NEEDED to get out. Wordlessly, Julie and Sharon silently opened the door and slipped out.
“Run.
Run.”
“RUN!”
That single word repeated in Julie’s mind as she and her mother made their way through the forest. The only light in the darkness was the pale moon but they didn’t need to know where they were going. The burning sensation had only grown stronger as they ran, bare feet slapping against the mud. They had long abandoned their clothes in the woods, stripping naked as if that would help alleviate the burning, but to no avail. Neither of them cared. All that mattered was finding the woman and making the burning stop.
Thats when they saw it: A clearing as if the trees themselves had willingly parted themselves. And HER. The woman from their dream, smiling as if two naked, dirty, feverish humans were the most normal thing in the world.
“Hello darlings.”
