“Wh- Wh- Where am I?” asked Janet. “What's wrong with my voice?”
Instantly, the professor was hovering above her with clipboard and pen in hand.
“You are now in the body of a police officer,” he answered. “Detective-Sergeant Ben Grabowski.”
From a nearby table, the body of Janet began to stir simultaneously.
“Wait, wait, wait,” moaned Janet's body. “I... I'm Ben Grabowski. What the--?! What's wrong with my voice? Hey, this ain't my body!”
“Of course not,” sighed the professor impatiently. “Evidently you're still just as clumsy and stupid in your new body as you were in your old one. Now be quiet, you! And you're not Detective Grabowski any longer. That person is over here in this fat, bloated body. No doubt she'll prove herself a far superior law enforcement officer than you ever did, you doughnut eating dimwit! You're now a frumpy housewife named... uh... Janet Donaldson. Now be quiet and sit still, Janet.”
“What's going on?” shrieked the real Janet, now trapped in the cop's body. “I'm Janet! I... I want my body back! What have you done to me? What have you done to my family, you monster?”
“Your family is fine,” said the professor. “All of the surgeries proved successful. Your son and his former body will require an extended stay with me. But everyone else, including yourself, will be released from my custody shortly and allowed to go back to life as usual.”
“You'll give me my body back then?” sobbed Janet in the police officer's gruff, gravely voice.
“No, of course not,” huffed the professor. “Do you have any idea how irresponsibly dangerous that would be? Conducting back-to-back, repeat brain surgeries... why the trauma would likely kill you! No, that's completely out of the question. You'll all remain in these bodies forever.”
“You won't get away with this, you madman!” screamed the detective now trapped in Janet's body. “As soon as you release us, I'll have a nationwide manhunt on to track you down and bring you to justice!”
“Oh, I think not!” laughed the professor. “Really, you were such a dumb cop, weren't you? You should thank me for making you a simple housewife instead. Look at yourselves! No one will ever believe your stories. You don't just have Janet's life right now – you have her face, her voice, her fingerprints, her DNA. Everything physical about you is now that of Janet Donaldson. Persist in acting foolish and the best that you can hope for is to be committed to an insane asylum... as a woman. Accept your new role as wife and mother, and you'll be far happier.”
“But I don't want this life!” wailed Janet, in the cop's body.
“You aren't listening to me,” sighed the professor. “This isn't about what you like or want. This is about science! We all must make some small sacrifices to push forward the frontiers of medical science.”
“I'll get you!” growled Janet's body menacingly.
“I'm hardly so foolish as to get myself easily ensnared like you did,” scoffed the professor. “After you are all released into your new lives, I will thoroughly disappear. You'll never find me again. So I suggest you adjust to your new realities. After I take a few more notes and run just one or two more small tests, you'll be free to make whatever you can out of your new existences.”
