Seeing Ms. McAdam worry over your well-being made it a bit easier to accept her as your new mother. Alas, after taking a glance at her husband, you could see that, while he loved your sister, he despised you, and you didn't knew why. And you weren't the only one to notice it, since your sister asked him “Dad? Why do you hate Kathrine so much?”
“Because she's an aberration! Beast-peoples SHOULDN'T have a soul!” answered Mr. McAdam.
This declaration made both Ms. McAdam and Emily gasp in shock, while you felt tears starting to leak from your eyes.
But there was a powerful entity who was watching and listening to everything happening around you, and this ever since Bastet took a liking to you, since you were born with a soul. Said entity was known as both the father and mother of Serra as a whole : the First. And said god was particularly angered by what Mr. McAdam said.
It is said that the First rarely involve themselves directly, but when they do, it rarely end well for whoever caused their wrath.
In a flash of lightning the head of Serra's pantheon appeared in front of the offender, a scowl on their face. No book ever described how the First looked, not that it was frowned upon, but they never appeared the same. If it wasn't for their current expression, they would have looked like a rather handsome man, this time.
Everyone knew who he was, able to sense it, and trembled. "You couldn't be more wrong." The god had only whispered those words but, somehow, everyone present had heard them.
"Wha-what do you mean?" Fearfully asked the man that should have been a father to you.
"Oh, I don't know… Why do you think humans are the only species without magic, your daughter notwithstanding?" Seeing he wasn't going to have an answer, the First explained "Because long ago humanity, in it's arrogance, tried to reshape Serra so they would be the only sentient species. Your kin broke the world, made it barren of any souls !"
"And then, when finally I found a way to maybe make Serra produce new souls again, who killed Bastet, ruining my plans? Humans, again!"
Hesitantly, your adoptive mother tentatively raised a shaking hand, reminiscent of a terrified student. "Th-then, Ō First, no offense but… w-why are humans still granted souls?"
The First looked at her and, for the first time since they came. "Because, while humans often end up becoming monsters, they just as often end up developing the qualities needed to make good gods. Sure, there is other species that can develop said qualities, but they don't do it as often as humans."
"Since Serra become barren, when it come to souls at least, I concentrated on making the gods grow in number, so we could collect as much souls as we needed. It might have been an error… One I intend to correct."
