Phil took the journal with him to school the next day. Looking around he saw his classmates, who all smiled when they saw him. After all he was popular and cute and hard to dislike.
Suddenly he got an idea. He wrote in the journal, "This elementary school, the middle school, and the high school only have male students and employees. Girls go to a separate school system." He looked up and saw that all the girls had vanished, as had the female teacher. In her place was a handsome young man whose name plate read Mr. Redson.
Now Phil wrote something bold. He wrote, "All of the boys in this system have been identified with the gene XY 4851. This gene causes them to grow in an odd way. Until they are 8 they experience normal growth. Starting at age 9, their growth comes only in random spurts and to random extents. Between ages 10 and 18 they hit one massive growth spurt that also causes the younger ones to appear older than they are as they are launched into puberty. After this spurt they may end up anywhere from 6'4" and 195 pounds to 10'2" and 540 pounds. They also gain extreme good looks and muscle during this spurt (the Passage), even if they looked average before. They do not age or change appearance after this, but still live average lifespans. The staff and teachers have all experienced this and educate us on it."
Phil looked up. He saw evidence of the changes all around. There were posters on the walls talking about the gene and the Passage. Mr. Redson was super tall and buff and even more good-looking.
But his fellow students showed the greatest change. Many looked the same, but a couple were different. A couple boys had clearly undergone the Passage, as even sitting they were both about 7'5" and 340 pounds of pure muscle, with handsome older faces to boot. Even some who hadn't undergone the Passage were changed. A nerdy boy named Weston showed a little more height and muscle tone, for example.
