Ryan Chang led Connor Ross to what was their first class of the day, which happened to be Algebra.
Connor let out a small moan before they entered the classroom.
"Something wrong?" Ryan asked, concerned about his new friend.
"Physically. No. It's just that Algebra isn't really one of my better subjects. I don't know Y we can't find his X. Besides, I thought their divorce was by mutual agreement."
"Was that supposed to be a joke?"
"It looks better on paper. I'll have to graph it out for you sometime," Connor said as they entered.
Naturally, all the chatter before the class began was over the Town Council decision to reveal were existence once a plan to do so had been approved and was ready to implement.
"I know this is a serious subject on everyone's minds, but right now the topic of conversation should be math related," announced the teacher as class began.
Connor was issued his text book and quickly kept pace with the other students, for it turned out they weren't that far ahead of him from his last day at his previous school.
Yet Connor couldn't help looking around and wondering who was who, or what in the case of the weres present; since everyone was currently in their human forms.
He was starting to get good at determining the weres from the normal humans, for the weres all seemed to be more muscular and handsome or beautiful, depending upon gender.
Yet there was one boy who caught Connor's attention for some reason.
No matter how often he stared at the kid and thought about it, Connor just couldn't figure out whether or not the boy was a normal human like he was (at the moment) or a were.
Sitting a few seats away from him and unaware of what was actually on Connor's mind, Ryan noticed his new friend's behavior. I wonder if he's gay like me? You'd think, considering he knows I am, Connor would have said so by now, but maybe he's not certain himself at the moment.
That left Ryan wondering whether or not he wanted to see if there might be something romantic between the two of them. Being Seniors, they were both 18, but Connor's first time with any were in Moon Lake would have him joining were society as that were, so...
As the bell signaling the end of class rang, everyone prepared to leave.
Connor thought he was being nonchalant about it, but the boy he had been staring at noticed what Connor had been doing.
"Is there something wrong?" the boy asked, gathering his things while facing Connor.
OOPS! Busted! Connor realized, as he felt his face begin to blush in embarrassment. "Err, I'm new here and was just trying to figure something out."
"Let me guess," the boy said, standing before Connor. "Whether or not I'm a were. Right?"
"Yeah," said Connor.
"I know the feeling. Eric Anderson," the boy said, holding out his hand.
"Connor Ross," he replied, returning the handshake.
"I was the new kid when my family moved here back in September. My brother Nate was all excited when Samantha Twist came to our house and dropped the were bombshell on us. He's had this werewolf fixation for years and jumped at the chance to become one."
"Not that there's anything wrong with them, but what is it with werewolves, anyway?" asked Connor, as Ryan joined them.
"Head start maybe? After all, they've certainly been around a lot longer than any other were that I know of," replied Eric. "Anyway, to answer your question, I'm a were-merman, or at least I am now. My girlfriend made me the man I am today when we fell in love," he added proudly.
Only Ryan noticed that Connor looked a little crestfallen when Eric mentioned he had someone.
"You don't look quite like other weres, even right now," Connor pointed out to him.
"Well, were-mers, let alone any aquatic based were, have more of a swimmer's lean and fit athletic body than the more big and beefy furry ones," explained Eric.
"The feline types are more lithe and agile," Ryan added.
"True," agreed Eric. "There are unique traits to every species and variety of were. Besides, I'm only a Freshman. Even without being a were, I still have the rest of puberty to go through."
"Really?" Connor said in disbelief.
"Yeah. Being a relatively small school, there really isn't any true division amongst the grade levels, at least not in the general classes," explained Eric.
"Do you like being a were-mer?" asked Connor.
"I am what I am because of my lady, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love her and she loves me and we're already planning to spend the rest of our lives together. What more can you ask for?"
"Nothing when you put it that way," realized Connor.
"Have you decided what were you might want to be? Or is someone else going to be your family were?" wondered Eric, recalling how things started out for his family.
"No, and no," replied Connor. "My younger sister and our folks might join in time, but I'm going to be the family rep once I decide on which one."
"Nate went first, but my whole family joined too in time," said Eric, not going into any great detail about the Anderson family history on the subject. "There's no immediate rush, but choose carefully, because it's literally a once in a lifetime opportunity."
"So I've heard," said Connor.
"Well, I've got to get to my next class. Nice meeting you Connor. See you around Ryan," said Eric, before walking away from his fellow students.
Ryan Chang waited until Eric rounded the corner and was out of Connor's sight before saying, "Come on. We've got to get going too."
