Just like the track and field events back in Lyre, the ones in Dinosaur City required a lot of space. Even more so, actually. Not only were Dinotopians often bigger than other Animalians, but they were proportionally stronger too. As such, their equipment had to be bigger and heavier as well. And like at Lyre, the throwing events took place outside of the coliseum there. One errant throw or an unexpected wind could send the thrown object into the crowd, which could seriously injure or kill people. Thankfully, there was enough open space outside of the Dino Dome for the competitors to have enough room to throw without hitting anyone.
There were plenty of Dintopians who were testing how far they can throw something. It was hardly a surprise that Marjorie had entered the shot put event. After the rather famous video of her throwing her old scooter into the dumpster, she was ready to show far she could really throw. The shot she was carrying was considerably bigger than the ones humans used and even heavier. It was certainly heavier than her scooter had been. Of course, Marjorie had been practicing a lot for this. Since the NBA wasn't likely to feature any Animalian players, she devoted her time to training for the IAC.
Everyone watched as the Diplodocus walked up to the line with the huge shot put in her hands. There was a long silence as they waited for the wind to die down. Marjorie twisted her body, resting the shot put at her neck. Well, the base of her neck anyways. Then she untwisted and launched the orb as hard as she could it flew through the air. It hurled out like an oversized cannonball. Eventually, gravity brought it back down, where it hit the ground and caused a decent amount of dust to fly. As soon as the dust settled, official ran out to measure the distance. Eventually, they determined that Marjorie's shot put landed 73 feet away, almost neatly. It wasn't a record-breaker, but the shot put had to be made larger and heavier to keep it fair. A normal-sized shot put would have flown a lot farther. Still, it was enough to get Marjorie into the Top 5 for Women's Shot Put.
==========
A surprise competitor in the hammer throw was Nessa, who had traveled from Skull Island for this. Most people expected the Elasmosaurus to be sticking with the swimming competitions in the IAC. Another surprising thing was the way she dressed. The IAC tended to be less strict about the dress codes for the contestants. There was little point in dressing to represent their respective countries as most Animalians were American or otherwise natives of their colony's country. Of course, their outfits had to be practical and more risque than necessary.
What made Nessa stand out was that she was very clearly wearing a kilt. The tartan design was too distinctive to be mistaken for a simple skirt. To go with it, she wore a sports bra with a matching plaid. Several people have jokingly called her top 'an eyecatching eyesore'. Nessa explained her rather eccentric choice for sportswear. "Ta be honest, I'm mostly here as a sorta preview for the Highland Games that'll be takin' place home in Scotland. We've got plenty o' games that are much like these track an' field events ye got here. We've been throwin' hammers for centuries. O' course, in Scotland, we got somethin' more like actual hammers, not these ball and chains ye're tossin' around here. And trust me, us Scots can really throw when we wanna."
But Nessa was here for more than just promoting the Highland Games. She was actually going to put action to her words. While the hammer used in this event was more like a ball and chain than an actual hammer, she was able to spin it around at a rather dizzying rate. Eventually, she let go and let it fly. As with the shot put, the hammer had to be made bigger and heavier to make it a fair challenge. But still, 252 feet was nothing to sneeze at. If it doesn't win Nessa a medal, it at least sparked interest in watching the Highland Games.
