You hesitate a moment, but given your situation and the apparent insistence of the marquis, you summon your courage to enter the carriage. The carriage driver lifts Garn into the carriage, gives you his hand, and then aids Elisa. The three of you take up the seat facing the marquis, yourself in the center, with Garn and Elisa clutching at you from either side. However, while Garn seems to be pasted to your arm out of nervousness, Elisa seems to be staring down the marquis. You're not quite sure how to indicate for her to stop without drawing the marquis' attention, when the targeted party himself speaks.
"I apologize for the rushed departure," Marquis Rajes states gently to you, with perfect etiquette, not giving any indication of Elisa's rather rude glare. "Normally I would have you spend some time getting acclimated at my manor here in the city, but given certain circumstances , I felt it would be best to immediately set out for the estate in Harispel. It will take much of the night, so feel free to rest as much as possible."
Thanks to his emphasis and a pointed glance at you, you are fairly certain the "circumstances" involve your gruesome encounter last night. You nod in grateful reply, not certain what to say, but the marquis seems satisfied with that. Eventually, Garn slips off in exhaustion, cradled against your side. However, Elisa lasts much longer, never taking her eyes off the marquis until she can no longer stop herself from slipping off. The marquis, on the other hand, remains leaning back comfortably against the seat with a slight smile. When you are certain your siblings are fast asleep, you finally meet the marquis' gaze.
"I apologize, Milord, I did not realize we would be traveling in your personal carriage," you whisper carefully, but Marquis Rajes waves his hand dismissively.
"You need not worry about such things," Marquis Rajes says easily. "In truth, I should express my regrets for not being able to greet you and your siblings properly; however, I felt it might be to your advantage for our current relationship to remain rather vague should anyone choose to investigate." You stare in surprise, but Marquis Rajes seems sincere. In fact, he has been nothing but accommodating and helpful since you first met. Is it really just because you are turning into a vampire?
"A nighttime journey is more convenient as well," the marquis continues after a moment, giving you a significant look. "I assume you understand why." You nod slowly, and the marquis sighs, a sympathetic look on his face. The two of you pass the rest of the night largely in silence until shortly before dawn, when you hear the wheels of the carriage grind against gravel, rather than the dirt road you have been on.
"It looks like we have arrived," Marquis Rajes states, as you peep outside through a gap in the window curtain to see where you will reside from now on.
