Ben sat in a cold corner of a shabby orphanage built long ago in a now run down part of the ever moving city. All but a few brave or drunkened souls ventured out this late at night, and those few would walk past the closest thing the 12 year old boy had to a home, without giving it a second thought.
The life of a orphan was likely not as glamorous or adventure filled as those in books and movies. No grand mystery to unravel or daring adventure to go on without being tied down. No, his life was wandering and begging.
The pale brunette simply laid in his corner. The other kids were off doing whatever. The staff barely cared about them as it was and funding was essentially non existent and the building itself should’ve been condemned if it were not so unimportant as to manage to slip right under government notice.
A shooting star went through the night sky. Despite light pollution rendering star gazing an impossibility here, somehow the light of this star shun through enough to catch the eye of the young boy through the window. He had long since grown up from silly games like wishing upon a star, the years in the orphanage had force him to grow up quick.
Yet a small part of him could not be helped but be drawn to the star. Something about it awoke something within him, something felt that this would be different.
And so with his last energy of the night, he muttered his wish.
“I wish... I wish there was more to my life than being a orphan... I wish things different...” He trials off into yawning as he absentmindedly pulls a torn blanket over himself and drifts off, mostly forgetting about it all.
But little did he know, his wish had set in motion events which would alter his life. For better or for worse.
