AN: I included a reference to another chapter for another story I made. The Time Travel one. Because why not, I may be an Anon but I have written a decently fair amount I think in recent times. Happy New Years everyone, I hope this site lasts all through the 2020s. And in the honour of the 2020s let’s take a trip back to the 1920s.
_______
Three men in suits stood in the waiting room, each weary fine fancy suits coupled with fedoras. The middle one, older than the two flanking him, smokes an oversized old fashioned cigarette despite the faded ‘no smoking’ sign.
Ben stand there shocked, these three looked like mobsters from some old movie they play sometimes in the orphanage in order to keep the orphans busy.
The middle mobster spots him and beckons him over “Ah you must be the kid, come over, come over. We don’t bright” he gives a toothy smile, showing teeth stained with alcohol and tobacco. The receptionist briefly stops reading her magazine to give an annoyed glance over to Ben and a curt nod to confirm that this is indeed his new family.
Swallowing his fears he walks over to them “ uh... hi nice to meet you... uh...” he wonders what he should call the man, dad? Uncle? Bro?
“Sure sure... the feeling is mutual. Please for now call me The Don, we can work out specifics later once we return to our family’s... legitimate busisnes”
They lead him into a very old fashioned looking car, something one might only expect to see in a museum or book. They set off, driving further and further away from the orphanage. Ben doesn’t say a word, both due to being intimidated by The Don and also not wishing to upset his new family and getting sent back to the orphanage.
It seems like they drive for ages, heading deep into an older part of the city. But eventually they come to a halt and he is led out of the car and towards a Pizza restaurant, this must be the business The Don talked about. Looking around he briefly notices that a lot of the cars on this street seem old fashioned, however he is pulled into the restaurant before being able to look much further.
The restaurant seems very normal looking, like what one would expect to find. The chef quickly rushed over and greets The Don in a friendly manner, which sets Ben at ease.
He doesn’t pay too much attention to their conversation as they lead him behind back. Soon they are brought upstairs to a hallway with a bunch of doors.
“This is where we sleep when in the neighbourhood” Explains The Don to a curious Ben, who immediately begins eyeing the place intently, wondering what his new home will be like. But before he can do too much he is led down stairs and into a basement.
He isn’t sure what they’re looking for until one of the other men opens up a hidden door. Causing Ben to look on with wonder at this mystery. They usher him to follow them inside, which he does with excitement.
Soon they reach another restaurant like area, although this one is more dimly lit and filled with smoke which makes Ben cough as he gets used to the stuffy room. He looks around the room, the tables are filled mostly with people dressed similarly to his new family, are they all related somehow? In that case he has scored the family jackpot.
He looks to another side, some sort of bench similar to the place where they served food at the orphanage is present. Although this place is filled with noting but drinks, smells and looks like the same stuff the head caretaker of the orphanage hides in her office.
A large stage can be seen at the end of the room, Ben stared with wonder at the sight due to live preformances not being something a orphan gets to see often.
A presenter begins to announce the next act up “Next up is stage regular Anna Graven, the lovely dame whose heavenly vocals need no introduction” this annulment causes a series howls and hoots in the direction of the stage as a beautiful young blonde woman in a fabulous red dress strolls in, winking and blowing kisses to the crowd before she begins her song.
Ben is drawn away from the performance, much to his disappointment, as The Don takes him out somewhere private to the side.
“Alright I’m going to explain to you how we’re going to do things” Says The Don to Ben.
