There were two places where Ty knew that he could always find his geeky friend Kent: In the bookstore, or at the library. The kid just LOVED being around books, and it showed. Kent was by far the smartest kid in class, and Ty was the one and only friend he ever had in school.
Ty had decided a while back that he would be Kent’s “protector”. He figured that Kent needed it now more than ever, since he was such a geek. All the jocks in school hated him, and Kent was a perfect victim for every bully who walked the school grounds. But Ty also realized that it was sometimes just plain fun to change Kent, who really didn’t care about what Ty changed him into. Kent knew about Ty’s power and he trusted Ty completely. Not only that, but Ty had secretly considered Kent as his “little brother”.
As soon as Kent had walked into the library, he set his books down on a large table. He then proceeded to the computer, where he initiated a search on books about Napoleon, another famous French man who was known to be rather short. Kent was only 5 ft 6” tall, so it was hard for him to reach the books which were placed on the top shelves.
After Kent had located the title of the book he wanted, he noted the shelf location for that book on a small piece of scratch paper. With this paper in hand, he walked the aisles, looking up at the signs, which indicated the location numbers for each shelf.
“Aha! I found it…” he cheered, as he found the shelf where his book would be found. He strolled along the shelf, reading the numbers on the backs of each book.
“Oh darn…” he said disappointedly, as he found the book that he was looking for. “Why did it have to be on the top shelf?”
Kent made a desperate attempt to reach for the book by standing on his toes. But he couldn’t reach it, he was just too short.
He then turned around and started to walk back towards the main loan desk so he could ask the librarian for a small step ladder, when he felt a tingling in his legs, which forced him to stop.
As he was still standing by the shelf, he suddenly felt his legs grow!
“Whoa!’ he said, as he noted the shelf as it appeared to be shrinking.
When he looked down at the floor, he noted that the distance from his face to the ground was increasing, as he legs were growing longer, making his head rise up further from the ground as he slowly continued to grow taller!
He was 5’7”… 5’8”… 5’9”…
Kent just looked around in amazement, for his legs wouldn’t move while he was going through the amazing growth spurt.
5’10”… 5’11”… 6”…
Kent looked sideways, as he helplessly saw the top shelf come within his reach.
6’1”… 6’2”… 6’3”…
His jeans were now much too short, as they began to resemble his shorts instead. From just below his knees on down, his legs were now completely exposed, where his jeans would come all the way down his ankles at first!
6’4”… 6’5”… 6’6”… and then it stopped.
There he was. Kent was able to move again. He was tall. He had grown a foot taller, in a matter of seconds!
As Kent turned back and walked towards the shelf where his book was sitting there, waiting for the tall kid to find it and pull it off the shelf.
When he finally had his book in his hand, he quietly strolled to the table, when he heard Ty’s voice ringing in his ears. He could hear Ty laughing.
Kent was expecting to shrink back to 5’6” again, when he heard Ty speak to him from inside of him.
“I want you to stay that tall. Remember, you gotta put the book back later!” Ty chuckled.
Kent quietly sat down with his book. He was happy. He could now get some studying done.
“Thank you, Ty…” he whispered to himself.
“I love you, little brother” Ty replied.
