Steve was wandering through the library vaguely hoping to find something to distract himself from the day he just had. He had been side eyeing the captain of the Jeff Gregson, college football team when they were both at the urinal. One of Jeff's friends had caught Steve staring and Jeff had laughed him Steve's face. Steve had just stood there as the guys made fun of him for his weight, his glasses, his acne, explaining in a dozen hurtful and colorful ways why Jeff was way out of Steve's league. Steve wanted to say something back, to think of something clever and witty to shut the rude-yet-handsome jock up, but verbal discourse was not his strong suit and Steve opted to run away crying.
Now he was stalking the shelves of the library. He eventually found himself in an isolated section of the building and thought it would be a good place to sulk. That was until he heard giggling cut through the dead library silence. Was someone laughing at his misery? He strode over to tell whoever it was to keep it down and ended up in front of a shelf section titled "Humor". He could hear the laughter coming from behind the shelves and pushed a few books out of the way to see who it was, the sound suddenly stopped and there was no one there. Between the shelves he spotted a book about the size of a bible with no title or markings. Curious, he picked it up and opened it to the first page.
"Ten Thousand Jokes and Insults to tell your Friends and Enemies."
He flipped through the chapters. There were hundreds of chapters each with hundreds of sections; Weight Jokes, Height Jokes, jokes that mocked and boasted intelligence, sexual prowess, dick size... the list went on. Steve smirked, this was what he needed, some verbal firepower to put that asshole in his place. There was one particular page that caught his interest. He bookmarked it with the attached silver ribbon and closed the book to look at the cover. There was no barcode so it wasn't a library book. He shrugged, stuck it in his bag and walked out.
