Laura counts her remaining diaper supply. Five. That was definitely not going to last anywhere near long enough. She initially considers ordering some online, but then remembers that her old purse was stolen a few days ago so she'd had to cancel all her cards. She has cash but 3 year olds weren't exactly allowed to go shopping.
So she can't buy them and going around asking nicely for some won't end well either. That left one option, "borrow" some. But from where? She'd need to go somewhere where there's be plenty of toddlers so she wouldn't stick out and where people would leave diaper bags unattended. Of course! There's a public pool down the street. She's been in the family changing room enough times with her nieces to know it's chaos in there.
Laura grabs some socks and a worn pair of sneakers and puts them on. She then empties out Alexis' backpack. Taking a deep breath, she opens the door and steps out of the safe house and into the big world. It's early enough that the street isn't too busy as she makes the walk but she's still paranoid about getting mistaken for an unattended child. Though she concedes that technically she is an unattended child.
The fears turn out to be wrong and she arrives at the pool without issue. It's already fairly crowded and Laura easily slips in to the changing room. She sees plenty of parents wrangling uncooperative babies and toddlers and not watching their possessions.
Seeing a naked girl her age go running through the room with an exasperated woman giving chase, Laura picks their bag as her target. Unzipping it she quickly slides some of the diapers into Alexis' backpack. She's about to turn to leave when she sees a swimsuit and swim diaper sitting out. Presumably intended for her fleeing peer. Laura considers the outfit, she's already here so maybe taking advantage of the pool would be fun.
