The following morning Paul picked me up and stuffed me into his coat pocket. He left me there for the morning while he was at work. It was lunchtime when he walked into the jewellers. He dug his hand into his pocket and thoughtlessly pulled me out. He put me down on the counter in front of a young lady.
"Can you just take one link out please?" he asked. The lady picked me up and took me into a back room where she set to work on removing a link from my bracelet. It hurt. It was like having a piece of my body removed. I wanted to scream in agony but of course I couldn't. After just a couple of minutes she was done. She carried me back into the shop and placed me on my back on the counter in front of him. Now that the pain of having a part of me effectively amputated had subsided my mind started to clear. Someone had made a material change to me... Sarah, the cow had changed the computer programme to say that while such a change was made I couldn't turn back. I was now stuck like this until they took me back to the jewellers shop and put the link back in. I led on the counter in impotent rage. Paul picked me up, dropped me in his pocket again, and left the shop.
That evening he handed me back to his wife.
"Thank you," Natasha said, putting me on her wrist to try me on. The elation at being worn was over all too soon as a minute later she put me down again and ignored me for the rest of the night.
