Bryan quaked with fear behind the alarm clock, certain that the young giants would spot him at any moment. He decided he had to move, but where? If he went out into the open, they'd see him for sure, and there was nothing else on the table but a halogen lamp that was so skinny that even he couldn't hide behind it.
"Nothing here," said Daniel, closing the top drawer.
"Try the rest," said his friend.
The nightstand rumbled as another drawer was pulled out. Bryan risked a peek around the clock to see that neither of the boys were looking in his direction, but that could change quickly. "Please let David come back," he prayed, but he knew that he couldn't rely on his friend for rescue. He had to do something on his own.
And he had an idea.
The giant Daniel sighed. "Nothing here. Let's check his desk."
"Okay. Let's hurry."
Bryan exhaled in relief. The pressure is off, but he still wanted to get someplace more concealed. As he heard the first desk drawer open, he knew it was time to act. He darted from behind the clock to the cord that dangled from the lamp to the outlet behind the nightstand. He would climb down that and be hidden from view as long as the young behemoths were scouring the room, then climb back up when David returned.
Almost cackling to himself at his own cleverness, Bryan grabbed the cord and turned around to begin his descent.
That's when he saw Daniel's giant friend, staring directly at him.
