The Chronivac autopopulated the blank fields as Jeff watched. His knew school was St. Bridgit's-an all girl's school. He felt his legs telescoping at the same time he felt like he'd been kicked in the groin, and the kicker had shoved their foot completely inside him. He leaned forward coughing dry heaves, as his boobs inflated. He staggered to his feet and clutched at the jacket that had been Dean. His room spun, and he collapsed in a heap on to his bed, except it wasn't his bed. This bed had a pink bedspread.
"Jeffrene! Get down here and eat your breakfast, you're going to be late for school!" called a female voice with a Southern accent.
Staggering to his feet, Jeff found he was wearing designer jeans and a pink cashmere sweater. He looked over at Dean, and then around the room covered with posters of male athletes and boybands. He shuddered as he saw the mirrored vanity and his reflection. He was definitely female, but he looked more like a giraffe than a supermodel. Then he saw the basketball trophies, and looked back at the jacket.
"Guess, you were a "letterwoman's jacket", Dean, who knew?"
He was hungry, so Jeffrene started downstairs toward the smell of sizzling bacon. It wasn't his house, and from the trophy he gathered that it belonged to a Willson family. And he was now Jeffrene Willson. He wondered whether there in fact had been a Jeffrene Willson that he'd replaced or if her entire existence had been generated by the Chronivac.
The woman at the stove was quite tall, but equally fat.
"Hey, skinny, when I was your age I could eat anything and be as sveldte as you. Now after six kids, everything goes straight to my hips."
"Mom, I'm not feeling quite myself today. Do you think I could stay home from school?" Jeffrene said softly.
"Since when do you call me Mom, I'm your Mother. Now you call me that!" snapped the fat woman.
"Sorry, Mo-other," Jeffrene said surpressing his anger. He didn't much like calling this stranger mother or mom.
"You do sound a mite out of sorts. Let me feel your head, Jeffrene."
She slapped her head against Jeffrene's forehead. "Hm? No, temperature. You ain't doing steroids are you?"
"No, ma'am," Jeffrene said--at least he didn't think so, but he'd just stepped into this life, what did he know about Jeffrene anywey?
"Set down, and eat you bacon and eggs. And eat an extra helping of your Malto-meal, best thing in the world to stave off illnesses."
Jeffrene was hungry and quickly devoured her entire breakfast.
"Mother, why did you name me Jeffrene?" Jeff asked in the hopes that this would reveal a flaw in the Chronivac's synthetic life.
"Oh, is that all again. Well, I was young and stupid, and I'd promised to name you after my Aunt Irene if you were a girl, and I told gramps that I'd name you after him, but left off the proviso if you were a boy. Well, as you know I married your father in high school, just so I could get rid of that awful last name Butts, and I was hardly going to call my daughter Jeffrey, so I compromised named you after both, hence, Jeffrene. Just be grateful, you didn't end up Butts Willson. You can always just use your middle name, though I know how much you hate being called Jeffrene Charo Williams. Just be glad you didn't get named Ed or Johnny, cause Charo was guesting on the Tonight Show when I went into labor. And besides it was your father's idea."
"More info than I needed, thanks."
"Well, honey, you've eaten. Now go brush those pearly whites, and git going. School starts in half an hour. If we didn't live across the street from St. Bridgit's I don't know how I'd manage to get you to school on time.
