"One of us needs to pick up the dice before they roll again." Laura said quietly as though just being loud would be enough. It might not be overcautious as the dice were pretty close to the edge of the table.
"I'll grab my first and put it in the box." Ana very slowly reaches over and picks up her die. The Asian teen then very carefully puts it in the box.
"Now, I'll pick mine up." Laura reaches over to pick the die up. The magical die is in her hand for a brief moment when the neighbor turns on the his stereo at full volume. The sudden loud music makes Laura twitch. The die drops and rolls onto the table.
“Fifteen years you have walked this Earth. Now this number is but nine. Each roll of the dice returns more of what you have lost.” Laura feels herself seem to shrink further, inches and puberty disappearing in the moment. She looks in horror at where the die is at the very edge of the table and Ana just missed grabbing it.
The die falls off the table and hits the floor.
"“Nine years you have both walked this Earth. Now this number is but four. Each roll of the dice returns more of what you have lost.”
"No, no, no." Laura's voice gets higher as the hem of her shirt gets closer to the ground. Ana just a few moments ago was small compared to her now loomed over the preschooler.
