After a moment, Laura decides to go left. She’s not sure if it’s the right way, but she doesn’t want to stand still for too long. After all, the longer she stands in one place, the more likely it is someone will swoop in to “rescue her”.
Laura toddles along, sucking on her thumb for comfort as she walks. For some reason, the streets are empty and no one spots her. After walking for a while, she pulls her thumb from her mouth and gapes. Somehow, she found her way to the magic shop! Her luck continues, as she discovers the door is ajar. She won’t have to struggle to open it, she can just walk in.
She excitedly walks into the shop, mentally preparing what she’s about to say to the owner. A man working behind the counter smiles at her and comes over, crouching down to talk to her.
“Hey there, cutie. Are you lost?” Laura shakes her head.
“Me here fowr-” she starts. She’s cut off by the man sticking his fingers into her diaper to check it. As he does so, Laura abruptly realizes that when she spoke earlier, it had been like a toddler. Her thumb instinctively goes to her mouth to be sucked on for comfort. She’s a bit concerned that her decreased speaking ability may prevent the man from understanding her.
“Ooh, you’re soaked,” the man says. Laura blinks in surprise. She hadn’t felt herself wet her diaper, but she must have done so while walking. “C’mere, I’ll change you.” The man lifts her up and carries her into a back room.
“Me here fowr dice,” Laura says urgently. The man raises an eyebrow at her. “Dice rowlled too much. Me not baby, me grown up. Big.” The man sets her down on a changing table. “Pwease. Wisten. Magic dice turn me widdle.” The man frowns thoughtfully at her. Laura’s heart races, wondering whether she’s managed to get her point across.
