During the car ride, Kaitlin tells Anna everything. When she finishes the story, Anna is silent for a moment.
“And where did the dice come from?”
“Thome magic shop.” Kaitlin tells Anna the address. Anna nods.
“I know that store.”
“What?”
“I’ve been there before. We can go check it out right now.”
“Ith probably clothed,” Kaitlin says.
“Then we can find out its hours.” Anna makes a left turn. In a few minutes, they pull up outside a cute little store. “Wait here.” Anna gets out of the car. While they wait, Kaitlin hears a faint hiss coming from Laura, who has been buckled into a car seat. She looks over. Laura is fast asleep, unaware of the urine filling her diaper.
Finally, Anna returns.
“Well?” Kaitlin asks.
“There’s a sign on the door. They’ll be closed for the next week. The owner is on vacation,” Anna says. Kaitlin groans. The car pulls away from the magic shop. “Don’t worry. When we get to my place, I’ll call the mall, see if anyone picks up. The very least we can do is get the dice back. It’ll be rough to wait a week to get you two back to normal, but it’ll go better if we know where the dice are.” Kaitlin can’t help but agree with that.
They arrive at Anna’s house. Anna removes the still sleeping Laura and squeezes her diaper.
“She needs a change. Come on in.” Kaitlin follows Anna inside. Anna directs her to sit on a couch, then disappears into a different room to change Laura. Kaitlin hears Laura cry then stop suddenly. Anna returns, holding Laura, who is now in a fresh diaper and a footed onesie, sucking on a pacifier.
“I heard you cry,” Kaitlin says to Laura. Anna sets her on the couch next to Kaitlin.
“I can’t blame her. Waking up in the middle of a diaper change has to be upsetting. But luckily, she had that pacifier ready,” Anna says. Laura suckles on her pacifier urgently. “All right, I’ll be right back. I’m going to make a call.”
After Anna leaves, Laura takes out her pacifier.
“Who call?” she asks.
“Anna ith calling the mall to athk about the dithe,” Kaitlin explains. Laura nods. She puts her pacifier back in and resumes sucking it. Kaitlin fidgets anxiously, waiting for Anna to return. Laura’s eyes slowly close. By the time Anna gets back, Laura is asleep, leaning against Kaitlin.
“Okay, here’s the plan,” Anna says.
“Thouldn’t we wake up Laura to tell her?” Kaitlin asks.
“Let her sleep. We can explain in the morning.” Kaitlin nods. “I called the mall and managed to get through to someone. Apparently, the dice were discovered by an employee and placed in the lost and found. I told them that we’ll be coming by in the morning to pick them up, so they set them aside. No one else will be taking them.” Kaitlin sinks in relief.
“That’th good.”
“Yes, it is.” Anna picks Laura up. “Let’s get you two to bed.” Kaitlin follows Anna to a nursery, where Anna instructs her to look for pajamas in a dresser. As Kaitlin locates pajamas to wear, Anna checks Laura’s diaper again, then carefully sets her into a crib.
Kaitlin slips on a pale pink nightdress and climbs into the bed Anna indicates. Anna turns off the light and leaves. Sleep comes quickly.
