Laura wakes up first. She looks around, confused, before recognizing the vehicle she’s in. She’s in Anna’s car, strapped into the same car seat she’d been in the night before.
“Oh, you woke up!” Anna says from the driver’s seat. Laura nods. “Good. Are you wet?” Laura shakes her head. “Good. You’re doing better than Kaitlin, then. When I checked on the two of you this morning, you were dry, but Kaitlin had an accident.”
“She diaper?” Laura asks.
“No, I put her in a pull-up. She only wet herself, after all.”
“Okay.” Laura looks out the window. Her stomach rumbles. She must be hungry.
“We’re almost to the mall. Once we get there, I’ll find the two of you some food,” Anna says. Laura nods in response. Then, she feels an urge to push. It feels like she should recognize it, but she doesn’t. So, without knowing why, she begins to push, grunting as she does. Anna looks at her in the rearview mirror and sighs quietly. So much for Laura having a clean diaper.
As Laura pushes, she feels something enter her diaper. Her jaw drops. She’s messing herself again! But she can’t stop once she’s started, so she continues, trying to get the humiliation over with. Her face turns red and scrunched with effort, her grunts get louder. Finally, she finishes with a small sigh. Her bladder twinges, and her diaper is flooded with pee in addition to poop.
“I poopoo,” Laura mumbles.
“I can tell. I’ll change you once we get to the mall,” Anna says. Kaitlin stirs awake. She stretches and yawns.
“What’th going on?” she asks.
“We’re on our way to the mall,” Anna says. “I didn’t want to wake you two, so I changed and dressed you, then put you in the car while you were still sleeping. Laura woke up a few minutes ago.” Kaitlin looks over at her friend and wrinkles her nose.
“Laura needth another change.”
“Actually, you were the one I changed.”
“What?” Kaitlin hurriedly lifts the skirt of the dress Anna had put on her. She gapes at the pull-ups she is wearing. “Why?”
“You peed yourself while you slept. So you’re in pull-ups. This is temporary. If you can make it through the day without an accident, I’ll only have you wear them at night.”
“…Fine,” Kaitlin grumbles, crossing her arms. “At leatht I don’t poop mythelf.” Laura lets out a wail.
“Look what you’ve done,” Anna sighs. “Give her a pacifier.” Kaitlin rummages in a diaper bag at her feet, pulls out a pacifier, and sticks it into Laura’s mouth. Laura immediately quiets. “So, Laura, the plan is that we’re going to pick up the dice from the store, since they found them and set them aside for us. After that, we secure them and keep them from rolling.”
“Then?” Laura asks.
“Then we wait for the magic shop to open in a week, bring the dice there, and have you two returned to normal. Sound good?” Anna asks. Laura nods. “Excellent.”
They arrive at the mall. Anna pulls a stroller out of the trunk of the car and buckles Laura into it. Laura suckles on her pacifier for comfort as she is pushed into the mall. Kaitlin follows them, carrying the diaper bag. Anna brings Laura into the bathroom for a quick diaper change, then buys breakfast for herself and Kaitlin in the food court. Laura is given a bottle of milk to drink.
Kaitlin leads Anna to the store where they lost the dice while Laura is still drinking her bottle. At the store, an employee crouches in front of Laura in the stroller.
“Oh, wow, she’s so cute!” the employee coos. Anna smiles.
“Thank you.”
“Is she your granddaughter?”
“…Yes,” Anna says after a moment. “Her older sister was playing nearby yesterday and apparently lost two dice? I called last night about them.”
“Oh, right! I’ll be right back!” The employee goes to a back room. As they wait, Laura finishes her milk. Anna swiftly replaces the bottle with a pacifier. “Here you go!” the employee says, returning. She hands the dice over to Anna. “Have a great day!”
