The next morning, Kaitlin wakes up, full of energy. She hops out of bed, then remembers that Anna locked the door. She has no choice but to wait for Anna to return. Curious about how Laura is doing, Kaitlin tiptoes over to the crib and peers at her infantile friend. Laura is still fast asleep, drooling slightly.
As Kaitlin is watching, Laura grunts slightly. A putrid smell fills the room. Kaitlin wrinkles her nose. She never wanted to watch her friend poop herself.
The door opens and Anna enters. She looks over at Laura, still asleep, then beckons Kaitlin out of the room. Kaitlin comes into the hallway.
“We’re going to let Laura sleep,” Anna says. “Babies her age need a lot of rest.”
“The’th not a baby,” Kaitlin protests. Anna ignores her and lifts the front of her nightgown. “Hey!”
“Yep. You wet yourself.” Kaitlin’s mouth drops open. She hadn’t even realized it. “Luckily, I thought to bring you some more training pants.”
“It happened while I wath athleep, though,” Kaitlin says.
“This is just in case.” Kaitlin reluctantly takes the clothes and training pants that Anna hands her. Anna brings her back into the nursery, pulls down her wet training pants, and wipes her off with wipes from the changing table.
“Go ahead and get dressed,” Anna whispers to her. She then turns her back to deal with Laura. Kaitlin gets dressed quickly while she’s not being observed, then waits for Anna to finish changing and dressing Laura. Laura sleeps through the whole process. Anna finally pulls a short toddler dress over Laura’s head, then picks her up.
“Come on, let’s go,” Anna says. She puts a diaper bag over one shoulder, grabs Kaitlin’s hand, and then leaves the house. Kaitlin gets into Anna’s car without being asked. The diaper bag is placed at her feet. She watches in awe as Anna buckles Laura into the car seat, still not waking her somehow.
“Are you thure the ithn’t in a coma or thomething?” Kaitlin asks. Anna gets into the driver’s seat and starts the car.
“She’s fine. She’ll wake up when she’s ready. It’s best not to wake her before then.” With that, they get onto the road.
