“You can head home.” Dan gently leads Laura to the front door. “No need to return the clothes, but if you want to stop by sometime and play with Alex, feel free.”
“Thank you, mister,” Laura says politely. Dan smiles at her.
“No problem,” he replies. Laura exits and Dan closes the door. Knowing that she’s still being observed, Laura sets off in a random direction, pretending to know exactly where she’s going. Once she’s out of sigh, however, she sits down on the ground, trying to decide what to do next. Dan’s house is the only one in this neighborhood that she knows how to get in to.
It’s dinner time, and night will fall soon after. Laura doesn’t want to be out on the streets in the dark. Where should she go?
