Michelle looked for another kid without a tail. "This is impossible." she said exasperatedly. Every child she saw had a tail by now. A few didn't like it. One boy ran up to her "Please! You have to help me!!!"
Michelle scoffed at him. "Get lost. You don't know how lucky you have it." The kid's eyes widened and he ran off. The voice of donkey in her approved "Some humans are just to afraid to let go. But if you really want it, you'll keep searching.”
Michelle saw a boy at the distance. Then, she recognized the face. It wasn’t a boy, was a girl, was Jamie. And the best part was that Jamie had two gray donkey ears and she didn't have a tail. Finally Michelle found what she was looking for.
Jamie apparently looking for the same thing. Michelle brayed at her. Her ears swiveled towards her.
"Oh Michelle, I’m glad to see you. You wouldn't happen to have a tail yet, would you?" asked Jamie.
Michelle smiled sadly. "No, I've been trying to get mine all day, no matter how bad I act, it doesn't seem to want to grow.
"Michelle took Jamie by the hand. "Let’s fix that together, shall we?"
Michelle’s long brown ears were constantly on a swivel for the sound of other donkeys. Maybe being around them will help? She didn't stop to think about the oddness of the thought. She had thought "other donkeys" which meant she considered herself one as well. Michelle just didn't care.
Michelle and Jamie continued their search, both of their ears constantly moving to try and find the sound of donkeys. Finally Jamie's left ear perked up.
"Michelle, I think I found some!" With that she ran ahead, pulling her behind her. What they found was a line of kids that led to a concession stand. A few donkeys were milling about behind the stand, grazing peacefully. Michelle heard a lot of braying from around the area, which she happily added to.
The smell of the place should have been unbearable, it smelled like an unkept barn. But Michelle and Jamie loved the smell. They drank as much as they could in. With a final sniff, Michelle's nostrils flared wide across her face. She looked at Jamie to see a similar sight. Michelle brayed with happiness.
She could feel her mind simplifying even more. Thoughts of grazing entered her brain, and she began to look upon the donkeys in the area with admiration.
She was interrupted by their turn finally arriving. They were given green smoothies.
Jamie sipped her smoothie, and turned to Michelle. "Heee haaaaww! This is so good! Ieeehaw sweeear they have put grass in this!
"Michelle didn't care that Jamie's speech was being interrupted by brays. She adored that sound now...Michelle froze. Jamie's skirt was being pushed up. Michelle brayed loudly and pointed. Jamie turned around excitedly, pulling out the black-tasseled, gray tail from her clothes and letting it sway free. Michelle was happy for her...but she sadly realized that she was still waiting on her.
Although she did feel very strange, as if something was pushing at her from underneath her skin. “Hee-hawwww! Don't give up! You are almost there. Find some more of your kind!”said Jamie.
Michelle couldn't really understand the voice very well this time, but she got its gist. Suddenly a moment of human clarity hit Michelle. She looked around her at the numerous donkeys, and Jamie.
She felt her own ears. What was she doing? ....a part of her started to get extremely scared.
