Laura wakes up in the middle of the night to an unpleasant situation. She throws off her blanket. To her horror, she sees a wet spot on the front of her clothes. She wet herself in her sleep! Her cheeks burn at the humiliation. And it’s as good a sign as any that it’s time for her to leave.
As quietly as possible, so as to not wake up Mark, Laura creeps over to Mark’s dresser and grabs a change of clothes. After she’s dressed, she gets her bag and sneaks out of the room. The floorboards creak a few times, making Laura pause and hold her breath each time. But no one comes to get her.
Laura silently opens the front door and slips out, closing the door behind her as quietly as possible. Now that she’s outside, she sprints away from the house. She’ll get to the magic shop long before it opens, but she prefers waiting outside over potentially being dragged to kindergarten, as she has now realized that it is a school day. Alexis would be expected in class.
Eventually, Laura slows her pace, confident she has gotten far enough away from Mark’s house to stop running. As she walks, the sun begins to rise, and the city wakes up around her.
