Try as he might, Jeff just couldn't think of anything for a centaur like him to do. Maybe he could rent himself out for rides? Or take up polo as a sport?
Then an answer came in the form of a stranger who leaped over his fence that night while he was trying to find a comfortable place to sleep since having a horse body meant using a bed was out of the question. Just as he began to close his eyes, he heard the sound of a bowstring being drawn with his sensitive ears and made a loud noise to frighten whoever was trying to shoot him.
His assailant dropped her bow, and he ran up to her just as she lit a lantern, allowing him to see that she was an elf. It made perfect sense. While most elves preferred to live in the forest, running around naked and worshipping trees and shit, he'd heard of a few returning to civilized society to work in specialized professions such as hunting, forest management, and riding. This particular elven woman was slender and curvy, but the muscles in her arms and legs proved she spent most of her time working outdoors. She wore a thin, almost invisible garment that covered her body, acting as camouflage and protection against the elements, but otherwise leaving her completely nude in the fashion of the elves. Her brown hair, shimmering in the moonlight, was tied in several intricate braids, with a long curtain going down her back and secured with a cloth tie. Underneath it, Jeff caught a glimpse of a pointed ear.
"Pardon me, but I thought you were a wild animal."
"Did you bother to check before you put an arrow in me, elf?"
"My apologies. Today has been a slow day, and I've nothing to bring to the market. And now, I probably won't have anything to sell for my guild."
"Your guild?"
"Yes. Myself and several other elves. We work for whoever pays us, but we mostly support ourselves."
"Does this guild work with centaurs?"
"Yes. We've worked with centaurs, trolls, merfolk, and others. Why? Are you in need of work, halfling?"
"Well, yes, and your insults aside, I think you could use someone like me. I move ten times as fast as any elf. I'd even be willing to let you ride on my back, provided you don't try to put reins and a halter on me."
"That is fair. Then please, come with me back to my guild. You may call me Adreena."
"My name is Jace. I hope your guild has a comfortable stable. And some actual food. Some strong drink would be nice."
"God, how you centaurs are all gluttonous drunkards."
