Colin froze stiff at the unmistakable sound of a pistol being loaded.
“Turn around...” a woman’s voice commanded.
Colin slowly turned to face a silky haired Latina cop ready to shoot.
“Stop, we don’t mean any harm!” Mary Anne yelled.
“I don’t give a damn, that’s my bike.” the officer replied, “Now hand me the keys.”
Colin tossed the keys to her and backed away.
“Just what gives you the right to take my bike anyway?” the officer asked.
“Our van ran out of gas and rolled down the hill! We nearly fucking died!” Lynn yelled as she stepped forward.
“You’re not the first looters I’ve run into.” the cop said with her pistol readied.
“We aren’t looting! Honest!” Mary Anne pleaded.
“Yeah right...” the cop replied “I’m not falling for any tricks out here.”
Colin looked over to see how Paige was handling this, and noticed she was gone. His gaze drifted to the open passenger door.
“What’s in there?” the officer asked Colin with a suspicious glance.
“Just our supplies!” Chester yelled.
“Your stolen supplies...” the officer replied.
She backed towards the door with her pistol aimed straight at Colin.
Colin closed his eyes as the sound of a gunshot filled the air.
He opened his eyes to see the cop slumped to the ground and Paige blowing the smoke off a shotgun.
“You’re welcome.” Paige smiles.
Everyone slowly approached the downed cop, Colin taking her badge for a closer look.
“Officer Josephine Hemendez... Lakeside PD.” he read.
“Yeah, yeah, how tragic....” Paige said as she removed the officer’s belt and put it on.
Everyone stared at her in disgust.
“What? We’re trying to survive out here!” Paige yelled as she walked off.
Slowly but surely, everyone walked away.
“For some reason, I feel like we could’ve been friends in another time... another place.” He sighed at the exploded skull of the remains.
“Hey, are you coming?” Paige called. Colin looked over to see what Paige was calling him for....
