“St. Mary’s,” Laura blurts out, saying the first elementary school she can think of.
“St. Mary’s.” The police officer pulls away from the park. “The nuns won’t be happy you’re not in your uniform.” Laura closes her eyes. She shouldn’t have said that. The school she went to as a child was notoriously strict, and the police officer is right. The nuns will not be happy.
St. Mary’s is about a ten minute drive from the park. The police officer comes to a stop outside the school and gets Laura out of the car. Laura looks around, trying to remember exactly where the school is, as it’s been a while since she’s been there. Her eyes land on a store across the street that she doesn’t remember from when she was a child. Laura’s heart leaps into her mouth. It looks like it’s the magic shop that the dice came from!
The police officer ushers her into the side of the school for girl students and hands her off to a scowling nun. The nun proceeds to remove Laura’s clothes, replacing them with a Catholic school outfit. Laura swallows her pride, deciding to play along for the day. Once school is over, she can go to the magic shop and fix things. The nun leads Laura to a kindergarten classroom.
Laura enters the classroom and sits on the floor with her new classmates, determined to not draw any more attention to herself. If she avoids getting in trouble, it’ll be much easier to slip away once school lets out.
