"Ma'am, just so you know, he is only legally responsible for actions that he makes in his right mind. While he has the mind of a bear, you'll need to help look after him, but any laws that he breaks cannot be used against him as he is not in control of his facilities," the officer said to Beth.
"Thanks for letting me know," she replied. "Ok kids, help me lead Papa Bear to the door, I'll go pull the car around." They all got in the car and went home. It was getting late, and everybody was worn out. Everybody headed to bed shortly after getting home.
Beth was still trying to talk herself into letting Tom get into bed with her. She felt bad for him, but it was really unsettling to see him like this. Tom wasn't himself. It would've been one thing if they had just painted his face and body; she thought maybe she could handle that. Looking at Tom, she could see that the machine had done more than just put some makeup on him. His face had changed shape; somehow the machine had bonded living tissue to his face so that he had the muzzle of a bear. He now had a long snout, a big black nose, and ferocious teeth. Also, his ears had turned to bear ears and moved to the top of his head. Looking down his body, the rest of him seemed a little more human. His chest, arms, and legs remained unchanged except that they were painted entirely brown and a little hairier than before. His hands and feet, however, had been changed into paws, with long white claws, and he had a tail covering his butt.
Beth couldn't get past the differences. She gestured to Tom to lie on the floor at the foot of the bed. He looked up at her with the most sorrowful look, but laid down regardless. Feeling guilty, Beth quickly switched off the light.
In the middle of the night, Morgan awoke to the sound of shattering glass downstairs. She woke her brother and they ran into their parents room. "Mommy Mommy Mommy!" Morgan cried. "I heard a loud crash downstairs. I'm afraid! I think someone's down there!"
"Mom, can you get Dad's gun?" asked Timmy.
"No Timmy, it's locked in the safe, and your daddy was the only one with the combination. Ohhhh, I don't imagine he'll be able to tell us now!"
Morgan ran over to her Papa Bear, asleep at the foot of the bed. "Daddy! Please help us! There's somebody in the house and you've always been big and strong for me. Please??" She shook him vigorously.
Tom awoke with a start. He saw Morgan over him shaking in fear. He couldn't understand what they were saying, but everyone seemed to be pointing to something outside the door. Acting on instinct, he bolted to the door and crashed through it with a growl. Smelling something foreign downstairs, he disappeared down the staircase.
His family crouched low in the bedroom waiting. For a while there was silence. Suddenly there was a ferocious growl, followed by screaming. "What the fuuu....!" "OH HELL NO!" Then they heard a gunshot, followed by silence. The silence seemed to last forever. Finally, there was a moan followed by a cry for help. "HEY! HELP! SOMEBODY GET THIS FRIKKIN BEAR-THING OFF ME! HEEEEEEEELP! The family cautiously made there way to the top of the stairs. There were two men downstairs. One man lay unconscious in a pool of blood, and the other was pinned to the ground by Tom. Beth ran to the phone and called 911.
