What are friends for?

added 3 years ago O Male

"I'm so glad you came over to check out my machine, Jonas. I'm really excited that you want to be the first one to try it out!"

"Well, you know, 'one small step for man' and all that," he answered. "Besides, it really blows my mind that I know someone who would invent this. And I wouldn't wanna miss my best friend's big moment."

"Just remember that no one has actually been in this yet, so I don't know exactly what will happen. It's all based theory, simulations and tissue-sample testing. But the project reached the confidence intervals for whole-body testing twenty weeks ago, and the reliability has just kept on improving since then. I'm still pretty nervous, though..."

"I'm not," said Jonas with a smile. He always was such a go-getter. He looked around the basement for the first time and laughed.

"Dude! This all looks like something out of a low-budget sci-fi movie!" Then he realized how that sounded and hedged: "um, no offense."

You shrug and giggle a little as well. "Thanks to cloud computing, I really don't need very much advanced tech here in the house in order to run the experiment. All I needed was a high bandwidth connection, a single cutting-edge nano-emitter to replace the photo camera, and some shameless crowdfunding to pay for high-volume remote access to a quantum computing center in Osaka."

"I'm still waiting on my PROJECT MORPH collectible T-shirt, by the way," Jonas cut in with a grin. He'd contributed like around $25 to your crowd-founding campaign.

"Dude, when we're finished here, we can sell autographed T-shirts with your picture on them," you laughed.

Jonas sat in the adapted photo booth and waited cheerfully. You pointed out the control console with a modeling gesture. "My uncle had this computer in college back in the 80s," you explain like a tour guide. "It's all I needed in order to coordinate the onsite tech. The whole user interface program fits on two old-fashioned floppy disks."

"It's nice to know we're on the cutting edge," he commented sarcastically.

You type in his name and type a function key to start the initial bioscan. The tiny, flickering CRT monitor clears its green monochrome screen to make room for the fresh batch of plain-text data that's popping up letter-by-letter in a dim, typewriter-style font:

"You sure you wanna go through with this, Joe?"

"Let's get morphin'!"
