The sound of the weapons seemed to have been drowned out by the roar of those titans as they marched in formation, demolishing what was still standing in that damn city.
That hole that could lead you to freedom ... Or that would attract whatever was up there to you.
The best thing will be to stay here, for now.
For obvious reasons, the streets were too dangerous to wander around. If one of those things didn't catch you, one of the surviving soldiers would surely shoot you in the back.
Running away had only brought you trouble all your life. From the day you ran away from home so many years ago and it had ended up taking you to, literally, to your doom. Therefore, you decide to stay where you are waiting for the storm out there to end as soon as possible.
The others seemed to have frozen in the fading light of the dying sun. Like you, they seemed to be pondering whether it was worth going out right now.
Pete seemed to have made up his mind and began to climb through the rubble to the hole in the ceiling. Another inmate tried to convince him to stay down here, but Pete kept climbing. Once outside, he looks back at you and promises that he would bring help. A promise that sounded vain to you considering the current circumstances and that the only guarantee was the word of a man you hardly knew.
Dodging the remains of a collapsed wall, he jumped into the backyard and began walking across the compacted ground toward the street. Each step was observed by each one of you, expectant. Giving thanks that so far everything has been going well. And you allow yourself to be positive and believe that Pete would find help and that they would come to your rescue.
Everything is going to be fine.
You had to jinx it.
Pete hadn't taken more than a dozen steps when a monstrous form swooped down on poor unsuspecting Pete and dragged them behind some rubble as he screamed in terror pleading for us to come out and rescue him.
None of us dared to go out
The noises that came from that dark alley would be forever etched in your mind for the rest of your life.
After that no one else tried to escape.
