You decide to accompany her back to the bunker. With luck, You may be able to "acquire" some medical supplies for your trip out of town. Perhaps you could form a group with other survivors. That would increase your chances of survival. The only downside would be finding someone who recognized your face, but the risk was worth it.
During the trip to the hospital the woman, Luisa Morrison was her name, told you more about her experience of the last week. She and her husband, Stuart, were passing through when all hell broke loose- leaving them both trapped in that city-. On the day of the earthquake, the motel where they were staying was destroyed and the two had spent the whole night among the ruins without knowing where they could take refuge. Steve was injured and had difficulty moving. Luckily a policeman found them , in the morning, and took them to the bunker just before the city was invaded.
"We thought we were finally safe. But Stuart ... "Luisa looks down "... he wasn't feeling very well the last time I saw him".
She was silent the rest of the way, allowing you to explore the new environment you were in, with your eyes.
That area of the city had seemed to have suffered a lot from the earthquake and there didn't seem to be a single building standing. But there were no signs of the stampede like all the places you had passed so far. Those armored giants seemed to have finished their work and an perturbing deathly silence filled the streets. It was as if you two were the only ones left alive in the entire city.
The hospital had been completely devastated by the earthquake. Several emergency vehicles and a few bulldozers surrounded the perimeter of the collapsed building, remnants of a now futile effort to rescue people trapped under the rubble. The only trace of a military presence you could see was a lone military ambulance parked by the entrance to the underground car park.
Luisa guides you to the entrance of the bunker. It was located under the physiotherapy building, the one-story building had collapsed like the rest of the hospital, but it seemed that the entrance had been cleared with heavy machinery, exposing the stairs that led to the basement and to the bunker. You started to go down to the bunker with the bar raised waiting for something to come out of the shadows to attack you.
The hazard lights illuminated your descent with a faint red light. When you get to the bottom you are stopped short when you find the bunker door -which should be hermetically closed- open.
Luisa comes down the stairs behind you but doesn't seem alarmed by your discovery. More alert than ever you move towards the entrance to take a look through the doorway. A stale smell assaults your nostrils but the only thing that you can see is the darkness.
The place was dark as the wolf's mouth. A single lightbulb hung from the ceiling in the hall. You hit the switch next to the door but it doesn't seem to have any effect. It seems there was no power.
There was no people.
There is no welcoming committee to greet you. Nothing seemed to be making noise down there. And the smell… the smell was becoming unbearable. Luisa must have been thinking the same because she started sniffing the air.
This place was not safe.
You gesture to Luisa to go back to the stairs but she seemed to be watching you with an imploring look.
"But Stuart ..."
Oh no.
"We're not going to get in there." And that was final. you were sorry for her but they weren't going to get into that hole to rescue a person who was surely dead.
" He could stay alive."
"Or it could be dead," you answer her .
"No…"
"Sorry,"You put your hand on her shoulder to comfort her "But we have to get out of here. This place is not safe."
The sooner you got out the better. That place was giving you goose bumps.
"Wait, I know the location of where they stored the medical supplies."You were surprised by that new information. You wonder if she realized that all she was doing was holding onto a burning nail "I can't be sure if the place is still intact but..."
If that information was true, it would help you to get out of town. But, the risk was also too great.
