A Game of Change

Growing Concern

added 18 years ago BM

"I think it's your hair," Terry suggested. "Everyone's always admiring it."

Sue ran a hand through her wavy brown hair, which ended at the middle of her back. Though she was embarrassed to admit it, she spent a lot of time grooming and caring for it. While she wasn't exactly vain, she always made the attempt to look more than presentable. And now the game was giving her the option to improve something about her. How could she just ignore it?

"Alright. I'll choose my hair."

Everyone waited a moment for something to happen. Sue felt a tad uncomfortable with so many expectant stares. "I don't think anything will happen yet," she said. "The card said it will improve every time someone rolls the dice."

"So, roll the dice!" Terry said. He couldn't help sounding a bit anxious. "According to the rules, you get an extra turn if you get doubles."

Taking a deep breath as if ready to dive into whatever was about to happen, Sue gently dropped the dice.

"6 and 3. So what's going to happen?" Tom half expected Sue's hair to vanish, or some other dastardly trick by this mysterious game. He and everyone else almost jumped to their feet when Sue suddenly gasped.

Her gasp, however, was not one of pain but of surprise. Suddenly her hair follicles lurched into overdrive, giving her the sensation of thousands of threads pulling themselves out of her scalp. She grabbed a lock of her hair and found the strands flowing right into her hand like a slow-motion waterfall. Then, just as quickly as it started, the sensation ceased.

Terry made the first comment. "Woah."

Letting the clump of hair fall, Sue could feel more weight than usual pulling on her head. She tossed it from side to side, and felt the familiar sensation of hair rubbing against her body...only now she was feeling it all the way down her back. She stood and quickly found a mirror in the hallway. There was nothing unusual about the reflection in the glass, except her brown hair was now falling close to her waist. "So it's going to grow every time someone rolls the dice?"

"It said your hair would respond 'in kind,'" Terry mused. "From the looks of it, it grew nine inches, which is the number you rolled."

"This game is driving me nuts," Dave said. He had been very quiet until now. "I'm not gonna let this thing turn me into whatever it wants. I'm out."

"Try telling that to the game," Tom responded. "It said we're all involved," he added a mocking ominous tone to his voice as he continued; "That NONE SHALL LEAVE."

"Okay, knock it off. I obviously don't have a choice in this matter, so let's just finish it. Are you going to move your piece, Sue?"
