One second, Jacob is sitting on the changing table in a blue swim diaper and swimming trunks. The next, his swim diaper is pink and his trunks have been replaced with a toddler girl’s one piece swimsuit.
“Just about perfect,” the woman says. “One more thing…” She snaps her fingers. The life vest Jacob is wearing turns bright pink, with the Barbie logo on it. “There we go!” The woman picks Jacob up and holds him in front of a mirror to see his reflection. Or rather, her reflection.
Jacob gapes. Her hair is long, tied into pigtails, and her swimsuit is a bright pink to match her vest and swim diaper.
“I think you make an adorable little girl, Jacklyn,” the woman coos. She carries Jacklyn back out to the pool, making a beeline for a group of toddlers being ushered into the hall. “Excuse me?”
“Yes?” asks one of the visibly harried supervising adults.
“I found this little girl with a very dirty diaper, so I went ahead and changed her.” The woman hands Jacklyn over to the adult.
“Thank you so much. I had a feeling we were missing someone.”
“She also had this bag with her.” The woman hands over a backpack that Jacklyn has never seen before. She leans in to whisper to Jacklyn. “You shouldn’t have pushed me, little girl. Don’t you remember? I don’t care about what people want.”
Jacklyn is carried out of the pool and, to her horror, out of the gym. Somehow, she’s gotten swept up into a group of visiting toddlers from the daycare next door. Once inside the daycare, the various toddlers are changed out of swimsuits into their daycare uniforms. The woman who did this to Jacklyn thought of everything, because the bag she handed over contains a daycare uniform with “Jacklyn” embroidered on it, to match the other toddlers.
Once she’s been changed into a different diaper and her new uniform, Jacklyn looks around, wondering what to do next.
