Altered Fates

Heading into twilight

added by RainingJustice 2 years ago O

"Uh... ladies, if you're finished...?"

Park's voice caused Jane to suddenly push away from the kiss, standing straight to attention. Kate was quick to follow, though both of them looked just a touch more frazzled after the intensity of their embrace. The colonel, for his part, looked like he was about ready to finally go and take that retirement he was always talking about, but kept some composure nonetheless as he ran a hand through hair that seemed to be graying right before their eyes.

Really, his relative calm in this bizarre situation was something to be admired. "Evans, I don't have a clue what the procedure is for... something like this..." It was clear that he didn't actually want to admit one of his officers had turned into some kind of half-machine thing. "Until we figure that out... I need both of you to follow me." He motioned for the women to come along before turning and walking off towards one of the nearby buildings. Jane and Kate both quickly followed, surrounded by armed guards, their hands very nearly entwining more than a few times during the brief walk.

The short journey brought them to what Jane quickly recognized as the colonel's office, a messy collection of furniture and scattered paperwork from which Park tried to direct the chaos that was an Air Force base. The airmen who'd been escorting them stopped outside, though more than a few were trying to peek in at the proceedings as both women took a seat before Park's desk. The colonel let out a long sigh as he slipped into his own chair, one hand coming up to rub his face for a few moments before he was able to speak again.

"So. You're a plane." Disbelief was evident in his tone. "Could've sworn you were white, but I guess I should learn not to judge."

She swallowed back a giggle at his little joke. "It's, uh... as strange to me as it is to you, sir." He stared at her like a man who doubted that very much, but allowed her to continue. "It just... happened. I found these weird dog tags-" For emphasis, she tugged at the tags still hanging around her neck. "-made a wish that I could be up there, with the flight headed out... and then I turned into... this."

His eyes lingered on the tags for a few moments before he blinked rapidly. "You found a pair of strange dog tags, and your first instinct was to take them home, wear them, and wish upon a star like Jimminy Fucking Cricket?"

"With all due respect, sir, I wished idly, not on a star."

"Of course." He sighed. "And after you turned into... this... you decided to go intercept a flight... for what purpose, exactly?"

"Uh..." She could feel the metallic tinge of her cheeks lightening in a blush. "Well... I guess I just... wanted to go... fly around a bit, sir."

"It was a good thing she did, sir, or I'd be splattered all over a field!" Kate quickly interjected. "My bird was failing, I couldn't get out, and she risked her neck to get me out of there safely. I owe Lieutenant Evans my life!"

"Yeah, I guessed as much when you were sticking your tongue down her exhaust port." It was the pilot's turn to blush. "So, is this... permanent, or can you... stop being a plane?"

Huh. She hadn't really stopped to consider that possibility. "Well... we can find out, maybe." With a deep breath, she reached up to her neck, slowly, even reluctantly, pulling off the dog tags. She winced, eyes shut tight, as they completely left her body and were set upon the table. After a few moments, she opened her eyes to find that her body was still a human-shaped amalgamation of a person and a jet fighter - it was, oddly, a relief to discover.

"Guess it is," Park mumbled, leaning back in his chair. "Alright... here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna call a friend of mine who works intelligence, and if he believes a word of it, we'll bring him out to... assess all this." Reaching under his desk, he produced a flyswatter, which he began using to carefully pull the dog tags closer. "Until we figure out what the hell is going on, these things are going under lock and key - and so are you, Lieutenant."

She tried to bite her lip, and promptly found that it was very hard to do so when said lip was made out of steel. "Sir, please," Kate spoke up, "She hasn't done any harm, and she pulled off one of the most badass rescues in the history of the USAF. Throwing her in a cell seems pretty inappropriate."

"Let me guess, you want to drag her into your bunk?"

"I... I uh.... I-I didn't mean that, no sir, but-"

"Oh, fuck it." He threw his hands up before dragging them down his face. "I'll have the airmen confine you both somewhere comfortable for tonight. God knows if she's got any plane-person germs, or something, you've already got them." He let out a small groan. "Christ, I need to get out of this chickenshit outfit..."

Disappointed though she was to be stuck somewhere overnight, instead of getting to go test out her new body, she had to admit - being stuck there with Kate might not be so bad. Especially with the impish grin that the pilot gave her as Park called for the airmen - somehow, she got the feeling that her fellow lieutenant planned to get in the pilot's seat of something tonight, and it wasn't one of the planes out in the hangars.
