There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Denise called. Her younger brother, Lucas, threw the door open.
“Denise, get out, I need to use the can,” he demanded.
“In case you can’t tell, I’m a bit busy,” Denise said, indicating Kelly, who was in the bath covered in suds.
“Why are you giving a baby a bath?”
“She’s not a baby. She’s a toddler. And she’s Jen’s younger cousin, Megan.”
“Huh.” Lucas looked at Denise thoughtfully. “I didn’t know Jen had a little cousin named Megan.”
“Well, she does. And we’re watching her for the night.”
“Why you two? Are you even any good with kids?”
“I’m good with Megan. Now, shut up and go pee outside or something.”
“I’ll just wait.” Lucas sat on the closed lid of the toilet. He watched silently as Denise finished bathing Kelly, then diapered and dressed her with the items that Jen brought when she returned.
“Okay, you can use the bathroom,” Denise said, carrying Kelly out of the bathroom.
“Close the door!” Lucas called after them. Jen closed the door.
“I’m a little bit worried,” Kelly said softly. Denise set her on the floor.
“Worried about what?”
“That he recognized me.”
“You think Lucas recognized you?” Jen asked.
“At the very least, that’s a chance,” Kelly said.
