Jacob would prefer to be referred to as a boy, but, worried about being discovered to be a girl during a diaper change, she decides to put down a fake, gender-neutral name. That way, if she does wind up needing a change, her gender marked as boy could be interpreted as being some sort of mistake on the form. But if she doesn’t need a change, she’ll be referred to as a boy.
After a moment, she puts down “Robin” as her name, and marks the box for “boy”. Just then, she hears voices in the hall. Quickly, she ducks into the play area and hides. The daycare workers and attendees enter. Once the children have dispersed throughout the playroom, she emerges from her hiding place to join a group of toddlers finger painting.
Robin, as she’s now thinking of herself, attracts the attention of a daycare worker who doesn’t recognize her. The daycare worker comes over.
“Hi, buddy, what’s your name?”
“Wobin.”
“Robin…” The daycare worker looks at the attendance sheet. “Oh, you’re here. Huh. I guess I must’ve missed you earlier. You’re a quiet little guy, apparently.” Robin merely shrugs. “All right, keep playing.”
When the daycare worker walks away, Robin feels a surge of excitement. She’s done it! Now, she just needs to wait for Seth to come.
