She is inside a womb. A real one. It's dark in here, and warm. She can hear a heartbeat all around her. She wonders where she is. The last thing she remembers is the white room, and regressing all the way back to a preemie.
Time passes. Being born is frightening, and then she's out- everything is bright and hurts her eyes! She is placed in the arms of a woman. It's hard to make her features out, but when she speaks, her voice is familiar (if older than she remembers).
It's Nina! "Hello, Kim. Welcome back."
The world is a lot like their own, but a few decades in the future. A woman had become pregnant, and gave birth to Nina. While genetically she was the woman's daughter, she also resembled herself. She had no explanation for how this was so. Of course, once she was able to talk, she began to explain her experience. No one believed her at first, but no one could explain how a toddler could know the things she did.
Eventually scientists began to study her, and found some very strange subatomic particles in her body. In her first life, Nina had been a science teacher in a high school- she devoted this life to learning as much as she could. When she was 13, there had been a breakthrough. A transmission of the same kind of unusual particles. A year later, they realized another visitor was being sent to their world. By building a sort of 'time antenna', they hoped to bring the transmission to the lab. Nina had been there, and to everyone's surprise, she became pregnant instead of their volunteer, despite being a virgin.
Nine months later, and Kim was born. Nina was only 15 now, and Kim was an infant. Nina took good care of her, with help from the scientists. "I'd never had children in my first life. I'm happy to be able to take care of you now, Kimmy."
Nina breast fed her. Kim found she enjoyed the intimacy of it, and couldn't help herself from calling Nina her mommy. Nina didn't seem to mind. By the time Kim was 5, Nina was in her 20's. Kim had learned quickly, and new everything about the scientist's discoveries; which, granted, wasn't much.
"Without the time antenna, the 'temporal transmission' from the alien craft could have ended up in any number of possible worlds. We can't even begin to copy their experiments. With luck, any others who have been scattered across various timelines will end up here, but we don't know how long it will take." Dr. Robert Vaughn was the lead scientist on the project, and he was explaining the operations to some very important looking people.
Nina was here, holding Kim in her lap.
"We think, however, we can transmit Nina or Kim to an alternate Earth. They will grow younger, from our point of view, then vanish, only to appear elsewhere...or elsewhen. This requires a special transmitter, but they both know how to build one, if the science of that Earth is sufficiently advanced. Then, thanks to our antenna, they can return here. In this way, we hope to contact another Earth."
"I should be the one to go, Mommy. I'm younger, so it'll take less time." Kim pointed out.
"I don't want to lose you, Kimmy. I think if we do this, we should both go. It should be possible to wait until I'm as young as you, and then they can begin transmitting you as well."
"The odds of us both leaving at the same time are slim." Kimmy frowned.
"We found each other once before, and now, you are my little girl. You have my genes in your body." Unlike how Nina appeared in this world, Kim was now Nina's genetic duplicate, having been formed from her genetic material alone.
"This time. Who knows what sort of parents we will have in the new world. And we're assuming we can survive there. What if there are no humans? We could never be born!"
Nina kissed her daughter's forehead. "I believe we will remain together. I know it's not scientific, but this is what my heart tells me."
Kimmy sighed. "Ok, Mommy."
Two weeks later, they began, and Nina began to grow younger. From a young woman to a teenager, then to a young teen, tween, child, and then small child. When she was just about the same size as Kimmy (which was strange, as the two now looked like twin sisters, rather than mother and daughter), they placed her in their accelerator, and soon, she was becoming smaller, in lockstep with Nina...
Something was different this time, however, as they both vanished, within seconds of one another, upon becoming newborns. Dr. Vaughn wondered if they would ever return...
