As Jacob is playing with the blocks, she feels a sudden pressure in her abdomen. Her eyes widen. Desperate to avoid using her diaper, she gets to her feet and looks around. Her gaze lands on a toddler training potty on the other side of the room. Quickly, she toddles over to the potty. It takes some doing, but she manages to remove her bottoms and diaper.
“Wow, someone’s being a big boy!” comments Luke. Jacob grins. She pees first, then begins to push, grunting softly with effort. Shortly, she’s finished. She gets to her feet. Luke comes over with a baby wipe to clean her up. He pauses. “…You’re not a boy,” he says quietly.
Jacob’s heart stops.
“Well, let’s get you cleaned up, then we’ll figure out who you really are,” Luke says. He wipes her down, rediapers her, and then pulls her bottoms back up. “All right, big girl, let’s go back to reception, because you clearly aren’t a little boy named Jacob.”
Before Jacob can protest, Luke lifts her and brings her to the receptionist. He explains that Jacob isn’t a boy, but a girl. The receptionist looks in her computer. After a few minutes, she has an answer for Luke.
“Oh, I see the problem. I thought she said her name was Jacob, but she must have said Jaclyn. There’s someone her age with that name in the system.”
“Geez. This is why parents need to be the ones to check their kids in,” Luke mutters, shaking his head. He smiles at Jacob. “Sorry I called you the wrong name for so long, sweetie! I’ll bring you back to play now.”
Luke brings Jacob back to the play area. He sets her down, then goes to empty the training potty. Jacob sits on the floor, simmering. After that humiliating experience, she’s reconsidering waiting for Seth to come, and is sorely tempted to just seek Seth out.
