Not long after Jacob has begun to play, a different employee from earlier comes by to check diapers. The employee, a teenage girl Jacob recognizes from school, sticks a finger down the front of Jacob’s diaper. Her eyes widen.
“You’re not a little boy,” she says, surprised. “I was going to change you into the boy’s uniform after checking your diapy, but clearly I can’t do that.” She picks Jacob and brings her over to a changing table. Ignoring Jacob’s protests, the teenager removes Jacob’s clothes and redresses her in the daycare uniform for girls, which is a short dress.
Jacob looks at her reflection in a nearby mirror ruefully. There go her chances of pretending to be a boy. She is unmistakably a girl.
“What’s your name?” the teenager asks.
“Jackie,” Jacob says after a moment, going for a name close to her real name. The teenager scrawls “Jackie” on a nametag and sticks it to the front of Jacob’s dress. Jacob, now Jackie, is then placed on the floor again to wander around as she wishes.
As Jackie gets to her feet and begins to toddle around, she spots Luke, who has seen her and is coming over.
