Maxine followed close to Claire. She was still a little nervous with so many strangers. But Claire had been kind, and James was nice even if he did look either bored or irritated most of the time. The bus driver, meanwhile, Maxine was pretty sure hadn’t said a word the entire trip until they reached this place, and she hadn’t really noticed much about the other two boys. One was around James’ age, and was definitely of Asian descent, though Maxine couldn’t tell where specifically. The other boy had sandy blonde hair and a slightly scruffy look, with worn and ripped clothes and slightly dirty hands.
The camp itself was very scenic. The forest was dense here, and though there was plenty of cleared land the thick tree line was still visible. A small stream ran through the camp, and the group had already crossed a wooden footbridge over it. Glancing to her right, Maxine had seen the stream intersect with another that flowed down out of camp. There were several small cabins scattered everywhere, with four much larger buildings closer to the middle of camp.
“Those larger buildings are the dorms,” Claire explained. “New recruits like you guys stay in the dorms initially, but the older teams each have a cabin to themselves.”
“How large are magical girl teams?” Maxine asked.
“It varies, depending on how many recruits come in at once. Three is the minimum, and we usually don’t go over six. “
“Do we room with our teammates?” James asked.
“Yes, but don’t worry about privacy,” Claire said. “All of these buildings use magic to increase the amount of space inside beyond what the outside would allow.”
“Bigger on the inside,” the bus driver said to a few small laughs.
“Pretty much,” Claire said. “Each team gets a suite in the dorms, with enough rooms for everyone to have their own bedroom. Of course, if you want to double up with someone you can. The suites also have a communal area, kitchen with a small dining area, one and a half bathrooms, and a small storage closet.”
“Those are pretty good acomodations,” James said with a nod. “And all this for the freshmen?”
“Yep. Those cabins are even nicer,” Claire said. “The camp actually has quite a lot of amenities. Being a magical girl is dangerous work, and this camp is also our largest base in this area. Figure people should be able to enjoy their downtime.”
